Time for brands to get political?

Levi Strauss CEO Chip Bergh recently spoke out on the issue of gun violence in the USA. While many welcomed his move, some believe private businesses should keep out of political issues. Apparel Insider is asking whether it is time for brands to make their voices heard in the political space, particularly on sustainability issues. This debate is more valid than ever given the anti-green rhetoric of the Trump administration.

I would really like to hear the thoughts of my LinkedIn contacts on this issue, either here or by emailing me directly at [email protected]

Yes! I do believe it’s time for brands to get political. As co-founder of a brand, Nudnik, that makes products from waste that never end up in waste, it’s important for us to tell our story and use our influence over our community to do good as opposed to just pushing consumerism to astronomical levels to make more money.

What else are we paying for? We're morally obligated as consumers to use our income to apply pressure on all of our utility providers (food, shelter, clothing, transport, water, air) so that each process and product is enacted in the most sustainable way possible. Subsequent to 200 years of industrialisation we see problems which can be mitigated and many creative thinkers have imagined (books, films, academic papers) possible best-case scenarios. The ideas just need support. If the currency is money we need to apply that pressure to influence under best judgement for better outcomes. So yes.. they are obligated. And so are we.

Yes. Companies take positions on policy every day, so it’s about time it’s on human rights issues like this.

Follow the money, business and politics are forever linked. Therefore, if policy is lagging business need to take lead. This is especially true when it comes to sustainability
