The Time is Always NOW: Living in the Present and Letting Go of the Past

There's a reason why there is a saying, leave the past in the past. It's a place we all like to visit more often than we should, but it's not always the healthiest place to hang out at. Whether it's regretting some bad decisions, romanticizing over a lost relationship, or just a feeling of nostalgia for simpler times, when we keep looking back it prevents us from proactively moving forward. I do it often and so do some of many of my friends but it's time for all of us to move on and start living in the NOW.

It's important to understand and recognize why we tend to keep looking back. Often, it's because we're dissatisfied with our current circumstances. Maybe we're going through tough times, feeling sad, lonely or unfulfilled, and it's all too easy to convince ourselves that things were better in way back when. The truth is, our memories are often filtered through rainbow-colored glasses. We remember the good times to be much better than they were and we forget the bad, reinventing an idealized version of the past that doesn't necessarily match what our reality actually was.

How can we break this cycle of dwelling on the past? One way is to practice mindfulness. This means living present in the moment and staying focused on what's happening right now, rather than getting lost in past memories of a time you can't go back to or worrying about the future that still hasn't happened yet. One way to accomplish this is through meditation if you want to calm your mind and increase your awareness of the present moment.

My personal favorite is to practice daily gratitude. Instead of getting stuck dwelling on what you don't have or what you've lost, make a conscious effort to appreciate everything good that you do have. This could be as simple as taking time each day to think about three things you're grateful for and why you're grateful for them. By staying consistent with a mindset of gratitude, you'll be less likely to believe the past was better than the present. It's also helpful to reframe how you think about the past. Rather than seeing it as something to constantly revisit or compare to your present, try to view it as a teacher. What can you learn from your all of your past experiences that can help you in your present? What mistakes can you become aware of and avoid in the future? By focusing on the major lessons you've learned rather than the all things you fell you've lost, you can use the past as a catalyst for growth rather than a source of frustration and misery.

Of course, breaking the habit of looking back isn't easy. Human nature makes us want to wallow in nostalgia or regret, especially when things aren't going well for us. By practicing mindfulness, gratitude, and reframing your perspective on the past, you can start to let go of these bad habits and move forward with a clearer and much more positive mindset.

I've been thinking about the past a lot and feeling pretty down in london not sure if it's the cold rainy weather, missing my family at home, the jet lag, the marathon of daily meetings or just wanting everything to work out the way I want already but writing this article is a reminder for me and for all of you reading this to leave the past where it belongs: behind us. I'm forcing myself to think positively, get out of bed soon as I publish this article so I can embrace the present moment, and trust that the future is going to be even more amazing then the past. And when we do find ourselves mentally strolling down memory lane, just remember that you are in control of you and you have the power to choose how you feel.

These lyrics popped into my mind from a Billy Joel song. They're a great reminder that we have to keep the faith during the tough times and that nothing is as good or bad as we think it is, because it's all in our heads.

"We were keeping the faith

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Keeping the faith

You know the good ole days weren't always good

And tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems"

Every second there's a new opportunity to change your circumstances...Jamison
