Time to be "Agile" and not "Fragile" - Management Principles

The word "Agile" which is famously used in the Software Development came as a breakthrough technological change which brought characterization of tasks and implementing short phased projects one by one with frequent reassessment as the development went on.

Considering the world is fighting along with this Pandemic, several articles, webinars and seminars have been conducted stating the "New Normal" what is that we see common in each - For me it's this clear message - "Time to be Agile, and not Fragile anymore".

Being agile means having an agile mindset, one that thinks more about the quality, the performance, and self development. The ones that are agile lay their focus on behavior, attitude, and values. They lay their focus on what to do next to be more effcient in their business/Job. This suggests that the ones that strive to be agile, they are more about the thoughts and the behavior that fosters agility.

As stated being Agile is a matter of a behavioral change and not process change, considering which here are a few Management Principles to deliberate upon -

Management Principles
  1. Self Awareness - Understanding one own self should be the 1st step, one need to understand their DISC profile and consider doing one's SWOT as per the results derived from DISC. Understanding these two principles are of paramount importance considering these turbulent times.
  2. Understanding Sanity Vs Vanity Metrics - Sanity Metrics is all about analyzing our work, what we are doing well, where are the areas of improvement in one self. It helps us in managing our drawbacks and leveraging our strengths. While, on the other hand Vanity Metrics shows us what we want to see, remember Harry potter movie with a mirror, it shows us what we want to see as a future outcome, but that's not always true it can mislead us to feel great. Maintain a balance in your vision and realty and try to bridge the gap.
  3. Think Big, Act Small - Being Agile means to validate and test early, Agile people value collaboration, working solution and managing change. Continuous improvement and refinement to deliver an effective value proposition one should consider Reskilling and Upskilling.
  4. What, Why and How principle - Conceptualizing What is the problem, Why this problem persists and how can we overcome this obstacle will help is continuous improvement on one's ability to infer and deliberate on any topic.
  5. Try the concept of Responding and not Reacting - Although with Agile we have to be quick on our toes but that does not mean we don't interpret the situation. Interpretation and running sprints not marathons is the key to success. Responding wisely to any situation shows one's strong EQ level which certainly will help sustain you for a better future.

Nicely written. On your point no. 3, I'd add an extension - Reality. For any business, Revenue is Vanity Profit is Sanity but Cash is the Reality. This crisis exposed each and every business which was operating away from reality. Businesses who developed good cash reserves have demonstrated resilience during these tough times and the rest succumbed to the situation and resorted to laying off or cutting increments or imposing pay-cuts or few other means. Time for businesses to wake up and focus on Cash as their end objective and see Revenue & Profits only as a means to generate cash reserves.
