Tim Scott, RIP

This week we lost an old friend, mentor and savant - Tim Scott.
Tim, an Aussie who never lost his Aussie personality traits, first came to Indonesia in the early 1960s, initially in Jogjakarta, I believe - where he picked up his language skills.
This is an early photo of Tim from the early 1960s
At that time, he was well known for his network and "spookish" sources of information.
During the 1970s he worked for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, which were critical times for Australia (end of Vietnam war, East Timor annexation amongst other regional geopolitical events) - and Tim was the holder of many interesting historical and "secret" titbits (which I often tried to wheedle out of him, but to no avail).
I first met him in the early 1980s (although he insisted it was earlier at Louis' Tavern at Tanah Abang), when he was an active member of the Jakarta Hilton Executive Club Fitness (which may surprise some of you). At the time he was the first Country Manager of Husky Oil (a Canadian company with activities in Indonesia and the Philippines) - indeed, Husky is still operating in Indonesia.
I have a vivid memory of Tim giving me the following advice in the Executive Club changing room before my marriage (my only one) in 1986 - he asked me whether I had undertaken a DCF analysis on my impending marriage, which he said is characterised by extremely high decline rate in productivity (however you wish to measure that), increasing operating expenditures, and potentially enormous abandonment costs. I (foolishly?) ignored his sage advice.
This was an indication of Tim's "happy - go - lucky" persona, underpinned by an incisive and knowledgeable intellect.
Tim, in the 1990s, was a key player in the Indonesian "golden" years of mining, initially with the Perth based Parry Corporation, then with Barrick Gold.
Tim was renowned to many of us in the Indonesian resources (and other) sector as a muse and a trusted mentor.
Those of us who were blessed to have met Tim Scott, have lost a true friend.
Vale Tim Scott
Retired
7 年A very dear friend for his last 30 years. Met when I was posted in Jakarta 1986-89 and we enjoyed many fantastic weekends with him and Karen at their resort on Kaliage Is. In 2004 he and Karen bought a property at Waipu, north of Auckland, where they holidayed every NZ summer, in a 1860s cottage they moved on to the site and renovated. Both their Waipu property and their, wonderful, rambling homestead near Jagorawi are full of Tim's books and other treasures collected over his adventurous and very full life. We will miss him. Thoughts are with Karen, missing her soulmate of 30 years, and with his sister and daughters in Australia.
