Tim Oliver - “Jumping in with both feet”

Based in Queenstown, Tim Oliver joined the Vega Commercial team around two years ago.

“The fact they have a dedicated commercial team was a huge drawcard for me. It’s also a real trailblazing, forward-thinking company on track for some massive growth and I wanted to be part of that.”

Prior to that, he had a couple of years commercial banking experience in Australia, before making the jump back to New Zealand as a mortgage and insurance broker. In 2013 he started his own brokerage in Dunedin, focussing on residential lending, life and health insurance.

He always had a passion for the commercial side of the industry, so when Vega came knocking and he saw the opportunity to pivot into that part of the business, he says he “jumped in with both feet.”

He now specialises in property, construction and business lending.?

“That includes commercial property, subdivisions and construction, and on the business side of things the sale and purchase of businesses.”

He says he was drawn to the excitement of understanding where businesses come from, what they’re doing and helping them get where they want to go.

“I applaud when people take the reins and go into the world to give it a crack. So moving into commercial I want to be able to support those types of people.”

While he loved helping to strengthen families through residential lending, he says commercial lending helps to strengthen entire communities.

Oliver says his clients can expect him to be honest, upfront, and to not pull any punches.

“A deal isn’t always linear, there are always tangents and sideways journeys, understanding that is what makes a fantastic broker.”

“You also need to be a connector, and that means involving the right people in the transaction to make it work.”

Part of that is supporting his clients to do the right things and speak to the right people to help? achieve their commercial goals.


He also believes there’s always a deal to be done, no matter how big or small a business is.

“Transactions of anywhere between $200,000 all the way out to $100 million. It’s anything and everything in between.”

?“We’ve got the residential banks and the retail guys, and more than a dozen lenders there. Then on the second tier market we have over 100 funders on our list. That's a fantastic amount of resources, so the scope of money we have access to is huge.”

“We also don’t operate as silos. We are always talking to each other as advisors, and so the scope of expertise is massive. Ultimately, we’re saving people a lot of time searching and connecting them to the people that have the money they need a lot faster.”

Oliver believes relationships are also everything when it comes to securing the best deal possible.

“I've got very good relationships with the lenders that I deal with and the clients that I help. It’s not just a transaction, and it’s not just about the numbers, it’s about the people and establishing an ongoing affiliation to help achieve their goals.”
