TikTok’s Ticking Clock

TikTok's problem with the US government isn't going away. This week the CEO was questioned in Washington. I'm all for this. Partly this reflects the US grappling with a problem that the rest of the world faced 20 years ago -"your teenagers use mass-media run by a foreign company" -?but that combines and compounds with the shift in attitudes towards both China and privacy. I worry much more about how TikTok chooses what content people see than what data it might collect. Pressure is building for some kind of shift in control. What that might be is much harder to say - letting Larry Ellison audit the 'algorithms' doesn't get us very far.?

Notwithstanding this pressure, TikTok is going well. But their growth isn't organic. It's a result of TikTok's enormous user acquisition spend. Additionally, internal Facebook studies reveal that the Reels clone is failing to get traction. Stories are a new form of content that you create and share with your existing network, and hence that anyone could copy from Snap. TikTok is a different network for different people and hence much harder to add to Instagram or other competing products. Indeed, it actually has more in common with YouTube - which has its own clone in YouTube #Shorts and will be adding monetization in the next 6-12 months.?

God I hope so! No one seems to give a sh*t that Byte Dance has admitted that US Data may be housed here, but is accessed by Beijing and the fact that no other app harvests as much data from our phones as TikTok. But millions and millions of US Users is it really realistic to expect that the app will be gone from the US and off phones?

Interesting thoughts! I keep hesitating to get sucked into yet another social media platform! But in my current job search for marketing positions, most want TikTok experience.
