TikTok time limits | DR. LARA
Let's start with a simple question: what do our brains consider “beneficial” for us?
To answer that, we should first remember that our brains have a region called the “reward center.” It helps us identify beneficial and harmful stimuli, and evolutionally, “beneficial” is something that launches the production of dopamine. This center makes us motivated to get engaged in those pleasant activities. Moreover, it can urge us to do something not that pleasant, like domestic chores or overtime, if we know we will get a significant reward for that.
The next question is, why is social media so addictive? The disturbing moment is that now, social media brings a quick dopamine boost even though a person doesn’t put in any significant effort. The brain gets used to such a simple source of pleasure, gets back to it again, and again, and finally requires way more stimulation than before to get the same amount of dopamine.
How can putting a time limit on using an app help?
Taking a pause and doing any distracting action, such as receiving and entering a code, helps to not lose track of time. We get a chance to make a balanced decision on whether we want to continue scrolling.
Even though the time limit is a reasonable and helpful move for many, it is still important to understand the root cause of such cravings for social media. Aside from the desire for extra dopamine, it can be boredom, anxiety, unwillingness to make an important decision or do a daunting task, and many more.

Should we get rid of social media completely?
Categorical solutions may not work in this case. While several studies mentioned that excessive use of social media can negatively impact mental health, we also get some perks from them. It can be better-maintained communication, awareness about news and social events, or growing a personal brand. It is simply essential to keep a balance between the online world and reality.
Could you provide any compromise solutions?
Yes, some tips can help even if you don’t want to delete the apps completely:
?Turn off notifications
?Set a grayscale mode on your smartphone
?Do not use your smartphone right after waking up and during meals
?Find new hobbies
?Engage in real-life social interactions more often
