TikTok testing "Nearby" feed

1. TikTok tests ‘Nearby’ feed

Coming for Google once again, TikTok is testing a new ‘Nearby’ feed that’s designed to display local content to users. The new feed is being tested with select users in Southeast Asia and users who are part of the limited test will see the new feed tab displayed alongside the “Following” and “For You” feeds on the app’s homepage. Creators will be able to add location tags to their videos. (Via TechCrunch)

2. BeReal has 10m daily active users

The app of the moment, BeReal, has over 10 million daily active users, despite only having 10,000 last year. The app is being hailed as the anti-Instagram, with the focus on real, unedited everyday life, as opposed to airbrushed, polished content. Brands have even begun getting involved, with Chipotle offering discount codes for free meals, and e.l.f. Cosmetics sharing behind-the-scenes content in their offices. (Via Social Media Today)

3. Instagram tests "IG Candid" carbon copy of BeReal

In another bid to stay relevant, Instagram has created a BeReal clone, IG Candid. Meta has confirmed the clone is being tested internally, and will perform pretty much the exact same way BeReal does. The feature will be available in users’ Story trays, and users will receive a notification at a different time, everyday, and have two minutes to share what they’re doing. (Via The Verge)

4. University of Cambridge and Google launch project to help users identify misinformation on social media

A team of psychologists from the universities of Cambridge and Bristol worked with Google to create a series of YouTube ads, informing viewers about how to identify manipulative content and misinformation on social media. This “prebunking” strategy pre-emptively exposes people to tropes at the root of malicious propaganda, so they can better identify online falsehoods regardless of subject matter. 5. Instacart is enlisting celebrities and influencers to make your shopping list?for you

Instacart (a US grocery delivery service) customers who need help deciding what to eat will now able to browse suggestions from celebrities, public figures, influencers, and retailers. The new feature called Carts, will display lists of grocery items themed around events (“Game Day” or “Self Care Sunday”) or picked by celebrities that customers can add to their own carts. Musician Lizzo is one of the first celebrities to be featured. (via The Verge)
