Let's start with the thing you all know; TikTok, has revolutionized the social media environment with its short videos, irreverent Gen Z commentaries, and innovative ads. However, as its popularity continues to grow, so do concerns about its impact on mental health, particularly among its primary demographic of young users.
Demographics
TikTok's user base is vast and diverse. As of 2023, TikTok had 1.5 billion monthly active users and is expected to reach two billion by the end of 2024. In the United States, nearly six in 10 teenagers count themselves as daily users. The Gen Z population dominates the TikTok user base in the US at 35%.
Average Viewing Time
The average time spent on TikTok has seen a significant increase over the years. In 2019, TikTok users only spent 27.4 minutes on the app; by 2023, this figure had risen to 55.8 minutes. The average length of a TikTok video varies depending on the number of views it receives. For instance, TikTok accounts with up to 500 views produced videos of approximately 34 seconds on average from March 2023 to August 2023.
Impact on Mental Health
The impact of TikTok on mental health is a growing concern. Research has found that the more time a person spends on social media, the more likely they will experience mental health symptoms such as anxiety, isolation, and hopelessness.
TikTok, like other social media platforms, encourages a "culture of comparison" mindset. Adolescents, who are already prone to concerns about their self-image and fitting in, inevitably compare themselves to the number of likes, friends, or followers other people have when they go online.
Moreover, TikTok's unique algorithm and landing page, which prioritize minutes and hours of view time rather than clicks and engagement, raise unique concerns.
This optimization for view time can lead to users spending more time on the app, potentially exacerbating feelings of alienation, hopelessness, isolation, anxiety, and depression.
