TIKTOK IS COMING FOR EVERYONE
TikTok has been making some updates in 2024, pushing to add to their share of the market. Specifically going after Google and YouTube users.
Earlier this month, TikTok prompted users to add a shortcut to the TikTok search feature to their phones' home screen.
The addition could help TikTok take a larger share of bottom-of-funnel searches by highlighting relevant product matches from TikTok Shop .
Back in 2022, 谷歌 acknowledged TikTok as a search engine competitor for top-of-funnel searches as Gen Z consumers started to prefer the social platform for discovery searches.
And, with the expansion of generative AI content, users are finding it difficult to trust online content. Trends show the preference for sourcing real human experiences and opinions on social media platforms.
TikTok has been slowly shifting its focus towards its search capabilities. Within the past year, TikTok has:
? Improved search suggestions
? Added search suggestions in the comments of videos
? And much more!
This doesn't mean SEO experts should ditch Google and move all their efforts to TikTok. But, if your business's target audience is younger, having a presence on TikTok might play a bigger role than you think. Your business should be discoverable where your audience is searching, whether that is Google, TikTok, or another search engine entirely.
You might remember that we wrote a blog about TikTok as a search engine back in November ??
TikTok isn't just going after Google's gig, but YouTube's too.
Earlier in February, some TikTok creators woke up to a notification from the social platform, encouraging them to post horizontal videos over a minute in length. TikTok sweetened the deal for the creators by promising to boost qualifying videos within the first 72 hours of posting.
This change, along with the experimentation with 30-minute video clips, leads us to believe that TikTok is situating itself to be a more direct competitor of YouTube by attracting more long-form video creators to the platform.
This cat-and-mouse relationship between the two platforms is nothing new. You might recall YouTube introduced Shorts back in September 2020, after it became obvious that TikTok had come to dominate user attention during the early stages of the pandemic.
Does this mean you should forego vertical videos in your TikTok strategy and move entirely to horizontal videos? No. While TikTok is experimenting, the platform's users seem hesitant about the shift.
But, there is nothing wrong with testing, especially if TikTok is pushing horizontal videos to the For You Page more. Consider adding some horizontal content to your TikTok strategy (where it makes sense for your brand) to increase your reach.
