Will tik tok get banned?

I wanted to take a moment to update you on the latest developments surrounding the potential TikTok ban, which has been a hot topic in the news lately.

Here’s where we stand:

As of April 2023, at least 34 of 50 US states have banned TikTok on government-issued devices, and the UK and EU have followed suit. While this only affects state employees and government-linked devices for now, the future of TikTok in these regions remains uncertain—especially with the upcoming US election, which could drastically influence the direction of the ban.

TikTok’s parent company, Byte Dance, is required to sell TikTok within the next nine months, followed by a three-month grace period, before a full ban could potentially take place. But with the political climate shifting and legal battles ongoing, we might not hear more until 2025. In the meantime, governments are concerned about TikTok's data sharing and its ties to China's national security laws.

What does this mean for your business?

  1. If you're using TikTok to advertise or reach new customers, particularly in the US ( it is likely the UK and EU would follow the US outcome. ) , you may want to start thinking about diversifying your digital presence now. ?
  2. Governments could go further than just banning TikTok on work devices. Will VPNs be illegal if they block TikTok entirely? We don't know yet, but it's a question worth considering. ?
  3. Building an email list and ensuring your brand doesn’t rely solely on TikTok or any one platform is a smart move. It's essential to protect your digital reach, so your business isn’t affected by sudden platform changes. ?
  4. There’s a lot still up in the air, but I'll keep you updated as we hear more. Let me know if you’d like further insights on how to prepare for this potential shift in the digital landscape.
