Seasons change and our love went cold
Feed the flame 'cause we can't let it go
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away
I dare you to do something
I'm waiting for you again
So I don't take the blame
Run away, but we're running in circles
Run away, run away, run away...
Here it is, the end of one year, and the beginning of another.
And as I sit here in my office, contemplating my plans for 2024, it struck me.
I don’t have to set any more New Year’s resolutions.
For the past how many years, many of us have been ‘running in circles’ Post Malone says.
We start the year with high hopes and big plans, but as the seasons change, our love and commitment to our resolutions grow cold.
Maybe, instead of setting new resolutions for each year, we just need to focus on tightening our screws.
Huh? I hear you ask?
I am terrible at DIY. But pride sometimes prevents me from admitting it to myself and my family, throwing in the towel and hiring actual professionals to do the job. I have never quite come to terms with this, especially as most of my male friends are terrific DIY’ers.?
Truly, comparison is the thief of joy.
In the middle of 2023, my daughter, Nshira came to me with a problem in her bedroom. The doors to her drawers had fallen off.
So I put on my Daddy Cool, trudged into our shed, grabbed my massive toolbox and went into her room to sort it.
Dad to the rescue.
I put in the screws, drilled new holes, fixed the doors, and checked it out. All sorted. I trudged back from the room, feeling smug with the adoring eyes of my daughter following me.
Daddy cool.
The next day I heard a bang in her room and the words ‘Dad…!’’
I went into her room, gingerly knocked on the door, and opened it.
All the doors of all the drawers had fallen off. Again.?

The holes I had drilled were too big, and I didn’t tighten the screws properly.
Work done = Zero.
As I was contemplating this on my usual morning meditation, I realised that in many aspects of my life, I am not that far from success. Real Success.?
The issues I had were that most of my screws were a bit too loose.?
Five minutes extra in bed.?Loose screw
An extra Kit-Kat chocolate after lunch.?Another loose screw.?
Five minutes late for my run, causing me to leave five minutes later, and arrive 5 minutes late.?Another loose screw.?
Staying 10 minutes later before going to bed.?Another wrong turn of the screwdriver.?
Just one more?turn of the screwdriver was what was needed.?
And enough loose screws, and what happens?
The doors fall off.?
In 2024, most of us don’t need any more new BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals),
We just need to tighten the screws on the old goals we already have.
So you and I? Mostly, we’re not far off. Most of us are 90-95% there.?
We just need one more turn of the screwdriver to hit 100%.?
So for the new year 2024, which screws need tightening in your life?
Let's do it together -??so our doors don’t fall off...
And whilst you're here...
Let's do life,
Steven.?
