The sports world is buzzing with questions about when and where?Tiger Woods will play next. It’s also buzzing with his childish tampon prank.?
Although Woods is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, I’m (once again) let down by the Stanford graduate’s lack of sound judgment.?
I struggle most with the message this prank is sending to the students who are participating in his foundation’s programming. Woods’ TGR Foundation?has been impacting youth from underserved communities by empowering students to pursue their passions through education for over 25 years. ?
Through innovative STEM coursework, college-access programs, digital platforms, and educator professional development, TGR Foundation 's mission is to provide resources and support to help youth connect their passions to their purpose. ?
“Our purpose is to equip kids with a solid education and the mindset to persevere. We are quietly impacting an entire generation for the better.” -Tiger Woods?
His statement about quietly impacting an entire generation for the better seems at odds with the childish and inappropriate?chauvinist prank?he played on Justin Thomas in the Genesis Invitational.?
“It was supposed to be all fun and games and obviously it hasn’t turned out that way,” Woods said. ”If I offended anybody in any way, shape, or form, I’m sorry. It was not intended to be that way. It was just we play pranks on one another all the time and virally I think this did not come across that way.”.?

I expect more from a 47-year-old man who is reported to be the richest golfer in the world with a net worth of $800 million. (celebritynetworth.com) Yes, Tiger is the guy who made golf cool, but his childish antics and?poor personal choices leave me unimpressed, and once again, let down...especially when it comes to the students he is mentoring through his sports philanthropy initiatives.?
I agree with Kara Sugar, the CEO of the Women's Global Empowerment Fund who said Woods’ gag was “misogynistic”, “tone-deaf” and “straight-up disrespectful to women and girls all over the world,”?per TMZ. Are periods embarrassing? Are they shameful? Are they a sign of weakness? What is the message that comes across to the kids at the TGR Foundation? ?
Following his second round on Friday,?Woods apologized, explaining it wasn’t meant to be sexist. Tiger,?actions have consequences. I’m not writing this trying?to “cancel” Tiger, but I am?calling out an athlete and a culture that still thinks it’s okay to minimize and weaken women.?
I’m proud to be a woman in sports, proud to have three daughters, and proud of all the men and women with the hutzpah to speak up against chauvinism (in and out of sports). ?This prank does nothing more than chalk up another flub-up?for one of the greatest golfers who has ever played.?
