Tiger Tactics: The Origin Story

Tiger Tactics: The Origin Story

We are taken back with the success of Tiger Tactics. Since we published the book in February not a day has gone by where we haven't heard from a lawyer or lawyers on how the book has touched their lives. We are deeply grateful for this feedback. The point of us writing the book was so lawyers wouldn't feel so alone.

We are often asked some variation of - what's the story behind the book?

The tale of the book is a group of people said "yes".

In the summer of 2016, I ended up in a slack forum with Jay Ruane and Billie Tarascio. We were placed in a mini mastermind group with 2 other lawyers. We ended up having a non-stop discussion about our practices - what was working and what wasn't. We shared openly and honestly with each other. We had each other and in doing so we realized we were not alone.

Fast forward a year to the summer of 2017. One July morning, I messaged our group - we should turn our discussion into a book. Billie and Jay immediately said "yes!". And we were off. That morning I pitched the name "Tiger Tactics". We tried to kill it because our book isn't very tactical and certainly isn't about tigers. But as Billie wrote that morning "it's sticky" and it stuck.

We decided on the bones of our book that morning - we would have 5 authors and all of us would write on 10 topics that we thought most relevant to running a small law practice. We decided that we wanted at least 2 and hopefully 3 women co-authors. Many solo and small law firm owners are women and we wanted our book to reflect that experience.

It turns out it is hard to get people to commit and follow through on a book that is both a lot of work and unlikely to return any money to its authors. We pitched the idea to several lawyers who either declined or said "yes" and never wrote a chapter. Sometime in late summer of 2017, Bill and Theresa committed to writing and followed through.

We finished writing the book in January of 2018. And the book spent the next 13 months working its way through a copy editor, a note editor, and rounds of revisions and additions. And finally on to a cover artist and formatter. Tiger Tactics entered the wild on February 22, 2019.

Great book! I know your coauthor Billie from a TBD retreat!
