Ties that bind - the story of students and international educators.

In the hustle and bustle of setting up for a science lesson, I was amused by the antics of two lively Kindergarten students who seized the opportunity to snap and edit photos on my phone. Their mischievous giggles caught my attention, reminding me of the joy and spontaneity that permeate the early years of learning. In contrast, I couldn't help but reflect on how I might have reacted differently in an IGCSE class, where boundaries are paramount. Yet, in the innocence of these young learners, I realized that the fault lay with me for leaving my phone unattended.

This playful incident sparked more profound thoughts about the bonds we form with our students, mainly as international educators accustomed to the transient nature of our roles. With each contract cycle and move, we face the dilemma of investing emotionally in our students, knowing that farewells are inevitable. Yet, how can we effectively impart knowledge, skills, attitudes, and habits if we fail to forge meaningful connections with the young minds entrusted to our care?

Perhaps my musings stem from anticipation and apprehension as the school year draws close and a summer break looms—a hiatus from the 300 hugs and the countless "Excuse me, Ms. Rosa" interjections punctuating my days. As educators, our experiences with students, both heartwarming and challenging, shape our journey and underscore our profound impact on shaping the next generation.
