The Tides Have Changed- The Unknown Consequence Covid-19 on Recruiting

Two moths ago Recruiters were complaining they could not find candidates to fill positions. The best strategy was looking for passive candidates in hopes to convince them to come to their company. Companies would need something to set them apart from their competition, besides pay, to attract top talent. It was battle of the best fringe benefits, company culture and competitive edge.

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago when the U.S. started shutting down cities and then states, now there are massive layoffs and furloughs. While there are many companies still hiring like crazy who are making huge profits from the Covid-19 outbreak (Pharmacies, Amazon, etc), companies that can telecommute are also benefitting from the now millions of unemployed. Companies no longer need to have the best fringe benefits, company culture or competitive edge. They just need to be able to work remotely during the Covid-19 crisis. Tech companies that were taking weeks to fill positions are suddenly finding candidates in one day as people are desperate to find employment in the unpredictable Covid-19 future. While tech companies are benefiting from it now, will they pay the price later? When we finally hit what the new normal for the U.S. workforce will be, will the Tech industries lose their new hires, or will the new employees stay loyal to the companies that helped them in during the crisis? Time will tell, but for now, recruiters’ jobs for companies who allow telecommuting just became a whole lot easier.
