A Tidal Wave of Ocean Plastic Innovation for Beauty
Excerpt from the May 2022 edition of Global Cosmetic Industry magazine
??Ocean-derived and ocean-bound plastic packaging are among the buzziest offerings in the beauty and personal care packaging world. Oceanbound plastic comprises plastics harvested from land-based waste before it enters waterways, while ocean-derived plastics are harvested from waterways themselves.
??Recently, Seacliff Beauty partnered with Swiss upcycling company Tide Ocean SA to develop packaging made from 100% ocean-bound plastic. The final PET, PP, HDPE and LDPE outputs are reportedly fully customizable and can be applied to a variety of skin care, color cosmetic and hair care products. Packaging is tested during the development phase for performance to ensure the best quality, even while replacing virgin plastics
Tide Ocean SA developed its upcycling method for ocean-bound plastics in cooperation with the Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing. The collection of oceanbound plastic creates social benefit, per the companies. In its first two years of business, Tide Ocean has reportedly transformed the equivalent of 25 million plastic bottles to protect marine life.
"We see ocean-bound plastic waste as a valuable resource," says Marc Krebs, co-founder of Tide Ocean SA. "By giving it a value, we not only prevent it from polluting the oceans, but also close the circle and protect fossil resources. That’s why we are so happy to have created a high-quality material that can dependably be used for a variety of applications."

"We feel that environmental consciousness is essential in the ever-changing world of beauty," says Vonda Simon, Seacliff’s CEO. "We are committed to using responsible packaging solutions to enhance our environmental and social impact."
??Elsewhere, RobertsBeauty teamed up with recycled plastics marketplace Oceanworks to create a collection of sustainable packaging solutions. The Mono-Material Oceanworks Vanity Palette can be molded in as much as 100% Oceanworks resin. This hinge-less compact’s single-material composition makes for easy recyclability.
The Oceanworks Eco Brik Stik, on the other hand, is molded in 45% Oceanworks resin. It reportedly uses minimal plastic and holds more product when compared to traditional stick packages. It also helps minimize shelf and shipping footprints, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
??Meanwhile, ICS now offers high-density polyethylene (HDPE) ocean plastic tubes featuring recycled HDPE derived from fishing nets, ropes and trawls derived from the ocean and maritime industry. It is recommended that the tubes feature an outer layer of ocean plastic HDPE and a virgin PE inner layer. The maximum outer layer recycled percentage is 50%. The tubes are available in 13-50 mm sizes. They can be decorated with offset printing, silkscreen and hot stamp, as well as glossy, matte and soft touch finish options.
