Thursday Tips & Tools #2

Thursday Tips & Tools #2

Hi from Bali, friends.?

I’ve never been a fan of the phrase “work-life balance.” The two aren’t opposing forces, as Simon (Sinek) says, they’re complementary.

It’s why a lot of “work-related” things have come into focus for the first time as I step out of my day-to-day routine. Here’s what I’ve been thinking about and looking into on this sunny Indonesian island…

What I’m Reading (Poolside!)

The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World by Dorie Clark

It’s unbelievably ironic. I didn’t start this book for SO long because I was swamped with work.?

But now that I’ve finally had a chance to open it, turns out Dorie Clark’s latest read is ALL about how we keep our heads down, always focused on the next thing, never giving ourselves a moment to breathe.

This WSJ bestseller is the logical next step in Dorie’s body of work; it is focused on the relevance and importance of strategic thinking and anticipating/reinventing yourself—things we don’t think about enough when we’re wrapped up in the daily “grind.” She presents some pretty eye-opening insights about success: we know it doesn’t happen overnight, yet we spend so much of our time looking for shortcuts, knowingly or unknowingly.?

A fascinating must-read for anyone who wants to take a step back, reflect on, and rethink where they are in their career and life. BONUS: If you’ve met the author, as I have, you’ll love listening to the audiobook that is read by Dorie herself.??

App I’m Loving

NONE. For the first time in years, and for the few weeks that I’m away, I am on a digital detox. Deleting all my social media apps has created an amazing amount of mental space for me—just a few weeks ago, I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or LinkedIn whenever I had a moment.

The next thing I plan to delete is my email app. I wonder what that will be like?

Tool I’m Using

Yoga. Yep, yoga. Surprising, isn’t it??

Right now, the most important tool in my life is the holistic experience of bringing mindfulness, spirituality, and physicality all together as one through movement. Each session is about following what my body needs and wants as I practice a certain pose and listening to what my body says to me.?

It’s a nice opposite to “Business Life,” where we often try to do everything at once and at speed, with a completely dispersed span of attention. In yoga, we breathe mindfully, slowly, and do what we do with full attention. It’s magic.

Quote I’m Loving

The power of consciously choosing how we’re going to spend our time—and therefore our lives—is monumental. You have to weigh those consequences and put your chips on the table. Trying to do it all means nothing of substance will ever get done.

-- Dorie Clark

Reflection I’m Pondering

“Am I *being*, or am I *doing*?” We spend so much of our “Business Life” being reactive. We do things, focus on the next things to do (as Dorie pointed out), and the bigger picture ideas in our brains never have a chance to marinate.?

As I step away from all that for a moment on holiday, I can feel those ideas taking shape. Thoughts about my bigger goals, my vision for TTGG, and how I can better help those I love to help.

How can we bring back this “being” into our day-to-day lives, do you think? How can we “be” a little more instead of just “doing?”

Let me know your thoughts on these tips and tools.
