Thrown Under The Bus? 7 Ways To Use Art To Reduce Workplace Jealousy & Art Therapy Training Sale!

Been Thrown Under the Bus???

I have seen workplace jealousy on several occasions in my 22 years as an Art Therapist within the hospital systems and US Federal government..?Unfortunately when we do our our best at work, inevitably someone will send us the stink eye and or try to throw you under the bus.

One instance was when I lead an Art Therapy intervention during a terrible tragedy involving 30 children who had witnessed a fatal crash after their school bus was hit head on by a drunk driver, instantly killing the drunk driver and his baby.?

The children and bus driver and all the families involved were in shock and gathered inside the large conference room in the hospital I worked at on a Native American Reservation in South Dakota.?The Behavioral Health Supervisor and the clinical Director did not know how to address the children & families in crisis, so I jumped into action and brought all the paper and art supplies I could find from my office into the conference room and proceeded to administer an evidence-based Acute Art Therapy Trauma Treatment Intervention that prevents trauma symptoms form developing and the resulting PTSD that can develop after traumatic events such as these.

I had the children, their families, and the bus driver engaged in the Art Therapy Intervention and all were drawing and sharing their experiences within the group.?There were tears as they shared their images that portrayed the bodies on the road covered in blood & children in the bus crying. Everyone in the conference room appreciated the intervention and the opportunity to share their feelings about this terrible tragedy.

?

The next day I arrived at work and was publicly admonished by the behavioral health ?director and co-workers for having provided the Art Therapy intervention, even though none of them took any action to help the traumatized children, families or bus driver!?I was appalled at the behavior I witnessed from them; that I was the ONLY staff intervening at all and the only acknowledgement I got was getting thrown under the bus for doing good work to help!

Dealing with jealousy among colleagues can be challenging, but there are several steps you can take to address the situation constructively. Here's some advice on how to handle jealousy in the workplace:

  1. Stay humble: It's important to remain humble and grounded, even if you're excelling at work. Avoid bragging or boasting about your achievements, as this can fuel jealousy. Instead, focus on maintaining a professional and friendly attitude toward your colleagues.
  2. Understand their perspective: Put yourself in your colleagues' shoes and try to understand why they might be feeling jealous. Consider whether your behavior or actions unintentionally contribute to their feelings. Reflecting on this can help you approach the situation with empathy.
  3. Foster open communication: Initiate open and honest conversations with your colleagues. Create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their concerns or insecurities. Encourage dialogue, active listening, and collaboration to address any misunderstandings or issues.
  4. Share credit and acknowledge others: When you achieve success, make sure to acknowledge the contributions of your colleagues and give credit where it's due. Sharing credit helps build a sense of teamwork and diminishes feelings of jealousy.
  5. Offer support and collaboration: Be proactive in offering your assistance and expertise to your colleagues. Collaborating on projects or providing guidance and mentorship can help develop a positive working relationship and alleviate jealousy.
  6. Be professional and consistent: Consistently demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and high-quality work. By focusing on your own performance and maintaining a strong work ethic, you can earn respect and reduce jealousy over time.

?

7. Build relationships outside of work: Foster relationships with your colleagues outside of the workplace. Engaging in social activities or team-building exercises can help develop a sense of camaraderie and diminish feelings of jealousy.

8. Seek guidance from superiors (unless it is them who are instigating this behavior): If the jealousy becomes disruptive or negatively affects the work environment, consider discussing the situation with your supervisor or manager. They may be able to offer guidance and address the issue appropriately.

9. Maintain professionalism: While it's essential to address jealousy, it's equally important to focus on your own goals and maintain professionalism. Avoid getting caught up in office politics or engaging in gossip, as this can create further tension and damage relationships.

Remember that addressing jealousy among colleagues takes time and effort. By fostering a positive work environment, maintaining open communication, and demonstrating empathy, you can work towards resolving conflicts and building a healthier workplace dynamic.

HOW TO USE ART TO REDUCE JEALOUSY IN THE WORKPLACE

Art can be a powerful tool for reducing jealousy in the workplace as it allows for creative expression and can foster a sense of unity and understanding among colleagues.

Here are some ways you can use art to address jealousy:

  1. Art workshops or classes: Organize art workshops or classes within the workplace where colleagues can learn and create art together. This can be anything from painting, drawing, sculpting, or even creative writing. Engaging in these activities as a team promotes collaboration, breaks down barriers, and encourages a positive and supportive environment.
  2. Collaborative art projects: Initiate collaborative art projects that involve multiple colleagues working together on a shared piece of art. This could be a mural, a collage, or any other creative endeavor. Collaborating on a project fosters teamwork, builds relationships, and encourages a sense of collective ownership, reducing feelings of jealousy.
  3. Art exhibitions or showcases: Organize art exhibitions or showcases within the workplace to display the artistic talents of your colleagues. Encourage everyone to contribute their artwork, regardless of their skill level. This allows individuals to appreciate each other's unique abilities and talents, promoting a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
  4. Art as a form of expression: Encourage colleagues to express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences through art. This can be particularly useful for addressing jealousy indirectly. Provide a designated space or a communal art board where employees can freely express themselves through drawings, paintings, or written pieces. Art can serve as a cathartic outlet, allowing individuals to process their emotions in a healthy and creative way.
  5. Art-based team-building activities: Incorporate art-based team-building activities into company events or retreats. Engage in group art projects, such as creating a collaborative mural or participating in a pottery workshop. These activities foster teamwork, communication, and appreciation for each other's creativity, helping to build stronger relationships and reduce jealousy.
  6. Art appreciation initiatives: Encourage colleagues to appreciate and celebrate each other's artistic endeavors. Create opportunities for colleagues to showcase their work, whether through a designated display area or an online platform. This not only promotes a sense of pride but also encourages colleagues to recognize and celebrate each other's talents, fostering a positive and supportive work environment.
  7. Art therapy sessions: Consider organizing art therapy sessions facilitated by a professional art therapist. Art therapy can help individuals explore and express their emotions, improve self-awareness, and develop coping strategies. By addressing underlying emotions and fostering self-reflection, art therapy can contribute to reducing jealousy and promoting overall emotional well-being.

Remember, art can serve as a catalyst for creativity, self-expression, and understanding. By incorporating artistic activities and initiatives in the workplace, you can create an environment that promotes collaboration, appreciation, and emotional well-being, thereby mitigating feelings of jealousy among colleagues.
