throwing off the routine

throwing off the routine

This morning, my alarm went off at the regular time—5:15 AM. I turned it off and thought about getting up, but decided to reset my alarm for 8:00 since today is President’s Day. I can’t remember the last time I allowed my Self to sleep in that late, especially on a weekday, but I’m glad I did because the extra rest was needed, and it was so refreshing to wake up to the sun shining and birds chirping instead of waking up to the normal morning darkness.

Before I went back to sleep, I mapped out my morning so I knew when I’d get my Daily Note out and the little bit of work I needed to do today. When I woke up, Silas was coming down the hall and hopped in bed with us, so I stayed in a little longer because the days of him cuddling up to me are dwindling, and I was not about to miss that opportunity. I then decided to take him to our favorite local coffee shop for breakfast since he doesn’t get to go anymore because his bus comes too early in the morning. With his big brothers at their friends' houses, Silas and I grabbed breakfast, and I pushed my morning work responsibilities even further out.

When we got back home, I had a call at 9:30 and then took some more time to show Silas some of my favorite pieces of art from a friend of mine because we were talking about Silas’s art at breakfast. In the back of my mind, I thought about the Daily Note and how it was going to go out so late and that I hadn’t sat down to receive the day’s message to write about. I was a little nervous and had a little regret that I didn’t get up earlier to do my morning routine and complete the Daily Note before enjoying the morning with Silas.

Little did I know that our conversation about art would lead to Silas going into the home office and create a new piece of art for my office--inspired by my friend's art.

Then, around 10:25, I finally sat down to write, and I realized the Daily Note was not going to suffer because I published it a little later than usual, and my experience throwing my routine off was meant to be the subject for the note.

Morning routines and our daily habits are an important part of building the discipline needed to reach our goals and aspirations. It can be easy to fall off the wagon when missing just one day of a routine, but this morning made me realize that following the same routine and not allowing for some room to deviate can cause you to miss out on special moments and experiences.

Had I stuck to my routine or skipped breakfast and talking art with Silas, I would have missed out on a fun morning, a new piece of art, and the lesson in today’s note.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
