Throwback Thursday: Selim Gilon (class of 2021)
Alumni Officer DACS
Alumni Coordinator at Maastricht University - Department of Advanced Computing Sciences
1. Which place marks for you?DACS?at UM and why?
Oh, there are a bunch! Tapijn tops the list, though. It's this rad place where we burnt the midnight oil studying but also had some good moments playing fu?ball and pool. I also really liked the new building. I can't forget the robotics room. We practically lived there during our final year, putting together an autonomous drone. I find the new buildings are super cool and convenient.
2. With which professor/teacher from then would you like to drink a coffee with now and why?
Tough pick, honestly! A coffee chat with most professors from back then would be great. But if I had to choose, it'd be Rico M?ckel ! A few reasons? He was one of those who wrote the letter of recommendation for my master's degree. I'm curious about the CoRoSect project he's been involved in. Above all, he's a brilliant professor and an amazing project advisor. I'd like to meet Anna Wilbik as well, as I learned a lot from her during my thesis in industry.
3. Which class did you love/hate and why?
I enjoyed many classes such as Graph Theory, Cognitive Neurosciences, Mathematical Modelling, Calculus, and Robotics. Data analysis and CS sessions were the real game-changers for me. On the flip side, Semantic Web and Software & Systems Verification weren't my cup of tea. Just didn’t vibe with those topics.

4. With the benefit of hindsight: what would you advice yourself if you were to start the study now?
Join multiple student clubs like Uros. Meet as many folks as you can. Study using active recall from semester one. Enjoy these golden years!
5. For which tasks/opportunities/challenges can other alumni contact you?
Good question! Let me give you a quick update. Post-graduation, I jetted off to Montreal to explore a master's in Deep Learning at MILA. Had a stint applying computer vision in the autonomous driving field. Then, teaming up with a buddy, we kickstarted SportBoost AI (startup). Our aim? Using computer vision to make advanced sports data accessible to all. We're crafting AI solutions for athletes and coaches to up their game. We’re still in our baby steps, but things look promising. We just deployed our 1st mobile app. Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions about the master I did, Mila, computer vision, startup, collaboration, mobile development, moving to Canada, or anything else!? :)
Absolutely thrilling to see Selim Gilon making remarkable strides with SportBoost AI! ?? It reminds me of what Henry Ford said, "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." It's fantastic how you're using AI to revolutionize sports. By the way, for those pushing boundaries, Treegens is supporting an incredible initiative – the Guinness World Record for Tree Planting. It could be a unique opportunity for partnerships! Check it out here: https://bit.ly/TreeGuinnessWorldRecord ????
Wow, Selim Gilon's journey is incredibly inspiring! ?? As Steve Jobs once said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." Keep leading the way in using AI to revolutionize the sports industry. Your work is the beacon of progress for athletes and coaches! ???? #InnovationLeadership
