#ThroughlinerSpotlight – Ryan Newill

I joined Throughline three years ago as a Content Strategist and Project Manager, following a long stint in communications consulting for federal agencies. I currently lead Throughline’s United States Postal Service Academic Outreach and Promotions programs, where we serve as their agency of record. Through Direct Effect, the brand we created for the Academic Outreach effort, we assist collegiate faculty in teaching their marketing students how to integrate mail into modern digital marketing campaigns.

I enjoy that Throughline prides itself on bringing creativity into spaces that may not historically view themselves as creative enterprises, whether that’s a corporate C-suite or a federal agency. Watching clients’ perspectives broaden through collaborative visualization exercises is truly rewarding, and it enables us to create game-changing work.

Outside of Throughline, I’m a die-hard cyclist and cycling fan. I started racing at 14 and have worked as a freelance journalist in pro cycling for more than two decades, so I’ve been lucky to see the sport from many perspectives ranging from grassroots to the Tour de France. For me, the staying power has come from the versatility of the bicycle itself—it can be used for recreation, transportation, competition and even rehabilitation, and it can be ridden by almost anyone, young or old, rich or poor. It makes for an enormous—and enormously odd—global community, and I enjoy it as much now that I’m racing old man categories and riding with my kids as I did tearing through the woods as an 18-year-old. Not many things last that long.
