In this week’s newsletter, we take a look at ransomware.
Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency?on its?stop ransomware?page states, ransomware is a form of malware designed to encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the systems that rely on them unusable. Malicious actors then demand ransom in exchange for decryption.
Governments around the world are raising awareness and defining directives to help mitigate the risk of ransomware attacks against critical infrastructures, organizations and individuals. However, the attacks continue to rise.
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported 2,084 ransomware complaints from January to July 31, 2021, representing a 62% year-over-year increase.
Approximately 37% of global organizations said they were the victim of some form of a ransomware attack in 2021, according to a 2021?study?by?IDC.
Here's?Information Security Media Group (ISMG)'s reportage on ransomware:
ENISA’s new "Threat Landscape for Ransomware Attacks" report analyzes 623 ransomware incidents in the EU, U.K. and U.S. from 2021 to 2022.?European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA)?officer?Ifigeneia Lella?shares how attacks have evolved and how 95% of reported incidents lack key data about how the breaches occurred.?Watch the full interview?by? Ransomware attacks and data breaches: One thing both have in common is the challenge of attempting to accurately understand their true scale and impact. Too often, data breach notifications lack useful details, while ransomware attacks and ransom payments go unreported.?Read more.
Unlocking the data generated by ransomware attacks is helping organizations better understand the risks, adopt defensive technologies and prepare for future attacks, says?Wade Baker, PhD, partner at?Cyentia Institute. He discusses new data on how quickly organizations are remediating vulnerabilities.?Watch the full interview?by?Anna Delaney
"No, we haven't gotten rid of ransomware, as everyone will say, but we are at least putting in place the mechanisms and things to deal with this, and more importantly, we're targeting the entire ecosystem, rather than just going after individual cases as they happen."
Marc Rogers, senior director of cybersecurity, Okta
Rogers has more than 20 years of cybersecurity experience. He began hacking in the 1980s and is now a white-hat hacker renowned for penetrating Apple's Touch ID and the Tesla Model S. Prior to Okta, Rogers served as the head of security for Cloudflare and spent a decade managing security for U.K. telecom Vodafone. He is also an organizer and head of security for DEF CON, the world's largest hacking conference. Most recently, Rogers helped found the CTI League, a multinational cybersecurity initiative combining industry professionals, government agencies and law enforcement agencies from 80 different countries.
