Thriving Together: Meet Latoya P. Brewster

Leveraging diverse perspectives allows us to develop better overall solutions to the problems we face. In this series, we take time to recognize our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and the work they do to create an environment where all employees can thrive. In each series post, we will be highlighting a member nominated by an ERG.

Tell me about your role at Mass General Brigham and your role within the ERG you were nominated by.

I am the Director of Environmental Services at Massachusetts General Hospital . We are the cleaning and disinfection subject matter experts and manage the hospital's waste operations, pest control and conference room booking system. I lead a diverse team of 500+ employees across Mass General’s main campus, community health centers and satellite locations. I am the Chair of the Association of Mass General Multicultural Professionals (AMMP). AMMP is the largest and oldest ERG at Mass General Brigham and is celebrating 30 years in August 2023. AMMP is committed to the advancement, retention, recruitment and development of multicultural professionals into leadership roles at all levels and areas of the Mass General Brigham organization.

How has this ERG positively impacted you?

AMMP has positively impacted my career at Mass General in several ways. AMMP has provided me with the access to interact with individuals and the opportunities to participate in events that I would not have had otherwise. For example, the conversation that led to me applying for my current role started at an AMMP speed mentoring networking event. AMMP has also provided me with a community of fellow employees that look like me, talk like me, can relate to my experiences and provide support as needed. Knowing that we are not alone is what helps us push onward.

What has been your favorite experience while participating in this ERG and what are you looking forward to in the next few months?

The most rewarding part of participating in AMMP has been the number of relationships that I've been able to build over the years. I believe in ‘lifting as you climb’. I'm thankful that I'm able to be a resource to other multicultural employees and assist them with navigating their career path at Mass General. I'm also fortunate to be able to use my voice and speak up in support of multicultural employees due to the nature of my role.
