Thriving Through a Decade: Insights from 10 Years in Business

Ten years ago, I embarked on a journey fueled by passion and a desire to make a difference. Today, as I celebrate the 10th anniversary of my coaching and consulting business, I find myself brimming with gratitude, a wealth of experience, and a renewed sense of purpose. Looking back, this decade has been a whirlwind of challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons that have shaped me personally and professionally.

The early days were, understandably, filled with uncertainty. Building a client base from scratch, navigating the intricacies of running a business, raising three little girls to become firm, independent women, and constantly honing my coaching skills were just a few of the hurdles I faced. Yet, each obstacle presented an opportunity to learn and grow. Let me share some of the pivotal moments I experienced during these ten years that helped me shape becoming the person – and coach – I am today:

• One pivotal moment came when my biggest client unexpectedly decided to terminate our contract. Overcoming this hurdle required diversifying my client base by actively pursuing referrals and networking within new industries. This ultimately led to a more stable and resilient business model and the valuable lesson that relying on a single client can be risky.
• Another pivotal moment came when I felt stuck in a rut, offering the same services for several years and needing a sense of innovation. Overcoming this hurdle required investing in professional development courses, exploring new coaching modalities, and brainstorming with colleagues, ultimately leading to expanding my service offerings, attracting new clients, and reigniting my passion for coaching and the lesson that continuous learning is essential for growth in any industry.
• A pivotal moment came when I realized my online presence was outdated and wasn't effectively attracting my ideal clients. Overcoming this hurdle required developing a content marketing strategy, revamping my website, and becoming more active on social media platforms. This ultimately led to increased brand awareness, a wider reach, and attracting clients who resonated with my approach and the lesson that a strong online presence is essential for visibility in today's digital world.
• Another pivotal moment came when I felt unfulfilled despite my business success, questioning the purpose of my work. Overcoming this hurdle required evaluating my core values, reassessing my target audience, and focusing on coaching projects that aligned with my mission, which ultimately led to finding renewed purpose in my work and creating a positive impact on individuals and the community and the lesson that aligning your business with your values can lead to more profound satisfaction and fulfilment.

Throughout the years, I've had the privilege of partnering with some truly remarkable individuals. Witnessing their transformations, their moments of "aha!" and their ultimate success stories has been the most rewarding aspect of this journey.

Of course, the journey could have been smoother sailing. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and the occasional feeling overwhelmed. However, I've learned that these challenges are inevitable aspects of growth. What truly matters is the resilience, the ability to learn from mistakes, and the unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. This is where the invaluable support of a great network consisting of mentors, teachers, friends, and colleagues played a crucial role. Their rigid and caring support helped me navigate difficult times and emerge stronger.

Reflecting on my journey, I see that my approach to coaching has evolved significantly over the past decade.

Initially, my coaching focused on empowering women returning to the workforce after career breaks. I provided guidance on navigating the changing job market, re-developing skills, and building confidence. However, as I gained experience and interacted with diverse clients, including ex-pats facing cultural adjustment challenges, I realized the importance of leadership development and cross-cultural communication. By incorporating these elements, I can equip clients with the skills to excel in leadership roles, regardless of their background or previous experience. This allows them to navigate complex environments, manage diverse teams effectively, and build strong relationships across cultures, ultimately leading to tremendous success.

This shift in perspective has allowed me to tailor my coaching style better to meet the unique needs of each individual, leading to more meaningful and impactful engagements.

As I look towards the next chapter, I am filled with excitement and a renewed sense of commitment. The future holds immense potential for both my clients and my business.

I am eager to expand my coaching offerings to include leadership development workshops, cross-cultural communication training programs, and couples coaching. Additionally, I plan to develop online coaching modules and resources to reach a wider audience and provide continuous learning opportunities for my growing community. Ultimately, I remain dedicated to empowering individuals, couples, and teams to become confident and effective leaders, regardless of their background or cultural context, and contribute to a more inclusive and collaborative global environment.
