It’s time to move beyond sustainability (enduring, while doing less harm) to thriving (having a net positive impact). Why, you might ask, since we are not even sustainable yet? The reason is that the goal will determine the outcome. Right now, most sustainability efforts lack the ambition needed to match the scale and urgency of the problems. Extractive economies are growing; consumptive lifestyles are booming. Unless we aim for nature regeneration, flourishing societies and prosperous economies, we are planning to fail. Thriving is more inspiring – but also necessary to hold business and governments accountable for making a positive difference.

A NOTE FROM JOHN ELKINGTON'S FOREWORD        

Wayne Visser is, above all else, a “possibilist.” And this is a state of mind, a state of being, that I recognise from all the great changemakers I have been privileged to meet and, in many cases, work with over the decades. My own conclusion is that we are at one of those great civilisational inflection points that comes perhaps once in a lifetime.
