Thriving as a Personal Brand in a VUCA World

There's so much uncertainty on so many fronts right now. And one thing I know for sure, is that to future-proof your business, career or whatever professional initiatives you want to lend your hand to creating a resilient and impactful personal brand is more crucial than ever.

If the chaos of the current environment feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. The good news? You can thrive by embracing key principles that will not only help you survive but truly flourish in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world.

Authenticity: Your Most Powerful Asset

Let's get real—authenticity isn't just a buzzword; it’s your secret weapon. Being genuine and transparent isn’t about crafting a perfect image; it’s about building trust and fostering loyalty.

When you lead with authenticity, you navigate complexities with a unique, grounded clarity, creating genuine connections that build lasting trust. Which is paramount in a VUCA world.

During the early days of my career, I often felt the pressure to conform to a certain image to be taken seriously. Imagine me at 25, going to the hairdresser asking for an “old lady hairstyle” so I could manage a team older than me and deal with C-suite executives from global companies. This was far from authentic. But back then I didn't know any better, and societal (and patriarchal) pressure was strongly in play and it was the game I felt I had to play to succeeed at the time.

This played out in different ways decades later. I ran an agency for 20 years, and in 2018, my team won the Best Marketing Agency award at the AMI Excellence Awards. An achievement, I'm very proud of, but underneath the surface, I felt like I was hiding behind my agency’s logo, and at the mercy of what my peers and industry heroe's would think. At the time I was the State Chair of the Australian Marketing Institue in Victoria, so I was also very conscious of my professional images and how I would be perceived in my industry.

Winning that award was ironically a turning point—it was a wake-up call for me to stop hiding behind a logo and company name and embrace my true self in all my professional dealings. I no longer cared if I didn't fit the mould of what people thought a successful agency owner looked like or an industry leader looked like.

That's the moment I realised authenticity wasn't just admirable—it was essential. I embraced my difference and uniqueness and really leaned into that. And in a beautiful twist, just four years later I was awarded Life Member of the Australian Marketing Institute. And the reason that recognition by my industry was so special is I had chosen to do it completely on my terms, and not trying to fit a mould or be someone I felt people expected me to be.


Agility: Mastering the Pivot

Change is the only constant and your ability to adapt is critical. Personal brands that thrive are those that can pivot and adjust strategies on the fly without losing sight of their core values.

According to Deloitte's 2019 Global Human Capital Trends survey, 81% of respondents cited the ability to lead through complexity and ambiguity as a key requirement for 21st century business leaders.

Agility is about being flexible and responsive to new realities. It’s about meeting challenges head-on with a mindset that welcomes change as an opportunity for growth.

A pivotal moment for me came when I challenged the idea that being polished and professional was non-negotiable. During a keynote at a legal conference, I chose to speak about the power of vulnerability, and it's role in the personal brand process.

Being vulnerable doesn't mean you need to share everything about yourself. But it does mean you are strong enough to admit things that may be different to the expectations people place on you. In my context as a personal branding expert, it means being open that I don't know everything, because I honestly believe no-one has it figured out - we are all just feeling our way through. But we can leverage what we've learned along the way to help us do that. And in my case that's three decades as a marketer.

In their context it was the notion that to run a successful practice and keep your clients engaged and be front of mind, there are times you need to put yourself out there, and while it can be hard, it takes courage. And a lot of confidence to empower your team to do it too. But the alternative is to not adapt, and slowly become less and less relevant.

Even the lawyers in attendance, seen as the epitome of professionalism, resonated deeply with the message. It showed me that agility—adapting my message and approach—led to more meaningful connections.


Vision: Your Guiding Star

When everything around you feels chaotic, a clear vision becomes your North Star. It keeps you grounded, guiding your decisions and actions even when the path ahead seems murky.

A strong vision not only keeps you focused on your bigger purpose but also ensures that everyone on your team is aligned and moving in the same direction.

My own personal vision, my north star, is to play my part in raising up as many positive voices of influence as I can, so that the next generation have a plethora of positive role models, and that people who are doing amazing things in the world get their message to as many people as possible, so they can help more people and create that impact - for the betterment of lives, businesses, communities around the globe.

How I do that constantly evolves, and teaching people how to connect with people through building an authentic personal brand is a big part of it. Beyond that my big message is that when you lean into your calling, your uniqueness, and that thing that lights you up, everything becomes easier, and you go from working hard to try and "create impact" to instead "being the impact" wherever you go, just by being you.

This is timeless message and one I'm passionate about - and as technology and society changes no doubt the way I execute on that will evolve and adapt as well.


Continuous Learning: The Key to Staying Ahead

Standing still is not an option. Continuous learning and development are essential for staying ahead of the curve. As a leader or personal brand, constantly acquiring new skills and knowledge is crucial. This isn’t just about keeping up with the latest trends; it’s about enhancing your strategic thinking, increasing your self-awareness, and staying sharp in processing complex information.

I remember the seismic shift in my career when I transitioned from running a successful agency to becoming a thought leader and mentor. Continual learning was my bedrock.

Whether it was diving into new marketing technologies (my happy playground) or exploring the depths of human psychology (my deep thinking and processing space), perpetual curiosity kept me relevant and ready for any challenge that came my way. And much of this formed the basis of the insights shared in my book Marketing Me.


Resilience and Well-being: Finding Balance

To sustain your performance over the long haul, resilience and well-being are non-negotiable.

This means taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. I'm not saying it's easy, but I am saying it can be done, when you make it a priority and align your decisions with it.

Balancing my professional ambitions with being a mother of five has been one of my greatest challenges and joys. It has taught me that prioritising well-being is essential for building the resilience needed to face challenges head-on.

Through my journey of integrating business, family, and personal life, I’ve learned that you can't pour from an empty cup. I've had so many seasons where my family has been challenged with physical health issues, mental health, and an assortment of issues most families face. Because that's just life.

So we need to be realistic as a personal brand. And I"m so passionate about this I devoted a whole section to this in my book. Because in personal branding, the brand is the person. A real, life living breathing human with feelings, moods, struggles and relationships.

We aren't machines, and we have to have a strategy that takes into account the human element of being a brand so you can go the distance


Experimentation and Innovation: Dare to Innovate

Innovation isn’t just for tech companies—it’s a mindset that should be at the heart of your personal brand. Encouraging intelligent experimentation and fostering a culture of curiosity are key strategies for thriving in a VUCA world.

Take, for example, my experimentation with leveraging AI for content creation. At first, it seemed a bit overwhelming, yet another thing to try to get my head around, even though I have a natural love for technology. But my brain was "oh here we go, yet another thing"

But by experimenting and pushing through initial discomfort, I unlocked a plethora of possibilities that significantly streamlined my marketing efforts and opened new avenues for creativity and exciting new ventures and initiatives which are all about leveraging technology to do marketing, content and being visible in a very aligned and authentic and human way.


Bringing It All Together

Thriving as a personal brand in a VUCA world isn’t just about surviving the chaos—it’s about turning challenges into opportunities and building a presence that’s resilient, adaptable, and authentically you.

Approach your own journey with passion and curiosity, and gently align your personal brand to your vision, passions and future focus.

By embracing authenticity, mastering agility, staying true to your vision, cultivating strong relationships, committing to continuous learning, and daring to innovate, you’ll have the best possible chance of thriving in an unpredictable and choppy environment.
