Unleashing Your Inner Authority: Self-Care, Boundaries, and Purpose

Ever find yourself in a job or career where you connect deeply to the mission or a community you want to serve, but the nature of the job, the culture, the entire paradigm make it brutally hard to take care of your own needs along the way?

If so, you’re not alone. Many people are so committed to “the cause,” they just tolerate a certain level of dysfunction and suffering. But, that’s no way to work or live. And, inevitably, you reach a breaking point where you either break down, break out, or break away.

So, how can you handle these experiences in a way that is more positive, more functional, healthy and supportive to your personal needs? How can you make yourself more “antifragile,” reclaim power and resilience, and find a better balance between doing mission-driven, idealist-fueled work and also being physically and mentally well??

That’s where we’re headed in today’s newsletter, based on a powerful, recent SPARKED podcast conversation with Yvonne Ator MD MPH , the founder of Thriving Physicians and Thriving Idealist, who has dedicated years to coaching compassionate, mission-driven physicians and and wide range of helping professionals. Her goal is to enable them to sustainably serve, lead, and thrive in their personal and professional lives, while making a positive impact without falling victim to disillusionment, moral injury, compassion fatigue, or burnout.

Here are the top five strategies to help you thrive both personally and professionally.?

  1. Prioritize self-care for effective advocacy:

Working in high-stress environments or emotionally demanding roles can take a toll on your physical and mental health. To ensure your ability to help others effectively, it's vital to prioritize self-care. When you take care of yourself, you create a strong foundation for inner authority, empowering you to advocate not only for yourself but also for others. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup; taking care of yourself is an essential part of being a change agent.

2. Acknowledge constraints and foster hope and action:

Challenges and constraints are an inherent part of life. Rather than sugar-coating these realities, it's essential to recognize them and navigate through them with resilience. By acknowledging the limitations and cultivating a mindset that encourages both hope and action, you can drive positive change and inspire others to do the same. Embrace the constraints as opportunities to grow and make a difference.

3. Connect with your 'why' and find purpose:

Understanding and connecting with your 'why' is a powerful way to stay motivated and focused on your goals. When you know the driving force behind your actions, it becomes easier to navigate through the complexities and challenges of your professional life. Your 'why' serves as your North Star, guiding you towards your true purpose and providing direction when things get tough.

4. Set boundaries to protect what matters:

To live a life aligned with your values and priorities, it's crucial to establish boundaries. By setting limits, you can protect what's important to you and create the time and space needed for personal growth and alignment. Boundaries enable you to maintain balance, ensuring that you can give your best to both your personal and professional life.

5. Embody your values and cultivate alignment:

To create lasting change and make a meaningful impact, it's essential to habituate and embody your core values. Through self-care rituals, personal development, and congruent actions, you can foster alignment between your inner beliefs and your external actions. This harmony empowers you to make the difference you're meant to make in the world.

Prioritizing self-care, acknowledging constraints, connecting with your 'why', setting boundaries, and embodying your values are critical elements for achieving personal and professional success. By embracing these strategies, you can unleash your inner authority and make a lasting, positive impact.?

Sadly and ironically (not surprised) all of this feels applicable to my life and career as a MACRO Social Worker..since the pandemic, I have had to pivot a ton (but more that we GET to) but also because my well being and mental health was not doing well and the universe literally was like..."not working, you're not doing well...you gotta GO" and so after a decade plus of working consistently in the nonprofit sector...I did have to go and walk away and not work full time because I'm sorry the sector, needs to wake up and do better! We need a change! I am working on my own coaching and consulting business NOW!

After some 25+ years working in the NonProfit / Human Services sector, this sounded eerily familiar. Thanks for an insightful and much-needed look at how employees of such organizations so often put their own self-care behind that of the employer and/or their clientele.
