You're Not Lazy You Just Need a System, Your Guide to Habits Based on “Atomic Habits” by James Clear - Vitality with Marilyne

Overview of Career Wellness: Career Wellness is a holistic approach to professional success that goes beyond mere achievement. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining your well-being alongside your career goals. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to focus solely on career milestones and neglect our personal health and happiness. Career Wellness helps us harmonize these aspects to create a fulfilling and sustainable career.

Physiological Needs (Maslow’s Hierarchy): Let's start with the basics. Career Wellness pays particular attention to the importance of physiological needs as outlined by Maslow’s Hierarchy. These include:

  • Nutrition: Fueling your body for optimal performance.
  • Movement: Keeping your body active and energized.
  • Sleep: The foundation of health and productivity.
  • Breathing: Techniques for stress reduction and focus.

Key Strategies for Career Wellness: This is a brief overview of the 10 top key strategies for career wellness. We’ll dive deeper into these topics individually in future newsletter article editions.

1. Start Moving More Physical activity is crucial for both physical and mental health. Regular movement can boost brain function, enhance creativity, and increase productivity. It also releases feel-good hormones that can improve your overall mood. Simple changes like taking regular breaks to stand up and stretch, incorporating walking meetings, and setting a daily step goal can make a significant difference. Remember, good nutrition supports physical activity and enhances its benefits.

2. Uncover Your Motivation and Values Understanding what drives you is essential for maintaining motivation. Identify your core values and what energizes you versus what drains you. Reflect on questions like:

  • What are your personal values?
  • What tasks or activities make you feel most energized?
  • How can you align your daily tasks with your core values?

3. Understand Your Career's Significance Take some time to reflect on what your career represents for you. Assess its importance in your life and how it aligns with your personal values. Consider the space that your work occupies in your life. Does it blend into your identity? Do you know who you are and what you want outside of your career? If you couldn’t do your job anymore tomorrow, do you know what brings you joy? Reflect on whether your long-standing career goals are still what you truly desire.

4. Setting Yourself Up for Success with the Right Support Success doesn't happen in isolation. The right support system can make all the difference. This includes:

  • Lean on Experts: Seek guidance from health practitioners, fitness and nutrition experts, mental health professionals, and career coaches. It’s logical to seek expert guidance for the complexities that come with our bodies and minds.
  • Lean on Your Support Network: Build and leverage a supportive network. Having people to lean on can make a significant difference in managing stress and maintaining career wellness.

5. Boost Your Productivity and Find Time in Your Busy Schedule Here are some strategies to help you manage your time more effectively:

  • Delegate, Delegate, Delegate: Learn to delegate tasks and responsibilities to others.
  • Make Your Life Easier: Simplify routines and reduce stress by streamlining your daily tasks.
  • Utilizing Efficient Time Management Techniques: Schedule tasks based on your interest and energy levels. Use time blocking to maximize efficiency.
  • Building Systems, Establishing Flow, Structure, and Routine: Create systems and processes that harmonize wellness and career. Establish routine and structure to maintain synergy.

6. Embrace Personal and Professional Development Opportunities Continuously seek out opportunities for growth. This includes learning and applying the basics of sleep, nutrition, movement, and breathing for well-being, advancing your career through professional development, and applying change management principles for personal and organizational growth.

7. Learn to Recognize Stress and Manage it Effectively Stress is an inevitable part of life, but managing it effectively is crucial for maintaining well-being. Apply stress management techniques, incorporate relaxation practices, and integrate work demands with personal well-being.

8. Investing in Yourself Investing in your wellness is crucial. Recognize the value of investing not only money but also time into wellness activities. Consider the benefits of investing in your health and well-being:

  • Improved physical health and energy levels
  • Enhanced mental clarity and focus
  • Greater overall happiness and life satisfaction
  • Reduced healthcare costs in the long run

9. Making Time for Rest and Social Connections Plan for rest and relaxation, prioritize social time with friends and family, and make time for traveling. Taking breaks and spending time with loved ones can rejuvenate your mind and body, leading to improved well-being and productivity. Consider scheduling regular vacations or short trips to unwind and reset.

10. Be Patient and Believe Career wellness is a journey. Be compassionate towards yourself, embrace your current state, and release any feelings of shame. Recognize that you are not alone—many people face challenges in harmonizing wellness and career goals. Understand that change is difficult and demands patience. Maintain belief in your personal success and visualize your goals and the path to get there.
