Now that you’ve prepared for the networking event, (see previous newsletter on “before” networking) it’s time to focus on how to make the most of your time there. For my fellow introverts, the key is to play to your strengths and engage with others in a meaningful manner without feeling overwhelmed. Here are some strategies to help you navigate while at each event you attend, with ease.
1. Learn by Listening
Introverts by nature, are often great listeners. The art of listening well can be a significant advantage in networking. Use this skill to your benefit by asking open-ended questions and genuinely listening to the responses. Not only will you make a great impression, but you’ll also gather valuable insights and information.?
TIP: Asking good quality questions takes the pressure off of you to speak and uses your strength of listening to enjoy and be present. Send Sabrina an email, [email protected] ?to receive your helpful Icebreaker guide, "Icebreaker Questions & Conversation Starters for Introverts."
2. Navigate Conversations Gracefully
Focus on small, one-on-one conversations rather than trying to engage with large groups. When participating in group discussions, contribute when you have something valuable to add and don’t be afraid to steer the conversation towards topics that interest you. This will make you feel more comfortable and confident.?Also, feel free to politely excuse yourself if the conversation isn’t supporting you. Remember as an introvert you know you have a certain amount of energy, so use your time and energy wisely.?
3. Observe Body Language?
Pay attention to social cues and body language. Utilize some of your strengths (use your quiet observation skills) when in a room full of small group conversations. This helps guide you on when to approach someone or when a conversation might be coming to an end. Being observant and thoughtful are strengths that can make your networking experience more productive.
4. Get Away for a 'Mini' Recharge Break
It’s essential to understand and respect your comfort zones. When you feel overwhelmed at an event, take a short break to recharge. It may not be time to leave the event yet, but there is a way to step away and recharge without running away completely.?
Find a quiet spot away from the main event or try stepping outside for some fresh air. Taking a ‘Mini’ break for a few minutes can help you regain your energy. Remember, it’s about quality interactions, not quantity.

If you are at work you probably already have your quiet place to hide midday when the overwhelm sets in. If you are at an unfamiliar location, you will need to scope out a place to hide. Arrive early and take a few minutes.?
Networking events are often held at a hotel, restaurant, or banquet hall. Womens bathrooms often have a nice lounge area, a mothers room or even a family bathroom. If none are available, go into a bathroom stall and take 5. Breathe and talk yourself down to ground yourself so you can last the rest of the event time or workday.?

By applying these strategies, you’ll be able to engage effectively during networking and social events without feeling overwhelmed. Stay tuned for the next article, where we'll discuss what to do after the event to maintain and build on your new quality connections.

1 个月I love #4 "Get Away for a 'Mini' Recharge Break"! I even do this at conferences... about mid-way through the day I'll choose an hour or two to go for a walk or rest in my room. It is especially important when I know there are also evening events. It makes such a difference!!! Great tips, Sabrina!! (I'm loving your newsletter!) ??
