Thriving in a Changing Environment
"If human beings are perceived as potentials rather than problems, as possessing strengths instead of weaknesses, as unlimited rather that dull and unresponsive, then they thrive and grow to their capabilities." ~ Barbara Bush
When reading about change or listening to conversations - the descriptives are so often negative. Words and phrases include "turbulent", "weathering the storm", "survival", "uncertainty" and "challenging". How would that landscape look if we own that change is an integral part of life and imbue it with positive attributes? Referring to the quote above as an illustration, Mrs. Bush says "potential" rather than "problems", "strengths" instead of "weaknesses" and the beautiful word "unlimited". In simply "changing" out words, the meaning becomes incredibly different - something that offers hope and a shining future. It's all about perception.
Our reality is we live day-to-day in a rapidly changing environment. To be the best we can be, to take a little pressure off, to move forward with optimism, consider the following:
? Welcome and embrace change and make it a positive indicator. When we acknowledge that with change comes added knowledge, opportunity and growth, suddenly it's not so scary. Acceptance is not a weakness - it is a strength - as long as you unlock the unlimited potential of what that change can mean.
? Perfect the art of communication. We are all experiencing change at a rapid pace. Creating a forum and encouraging a culture of open conversation and meaningful dialogue with others in our lives, both in our business and personal world, is healthy and cathartic. Talking things through helps allay our fears and in the process we amass an inventory of new and useful information as well as skills.
? Knowing change is integral - go ahead and plan. We know best where we are and where we want to be; now we have to articulate how we are going to get there. Clarifying goals and expectations, being open to feedback and focusing on desired outcomes allows the luxury of taking smaller steps that are more meaningful and manageable day-to-day.
As we become more aware, more observant of change around us, we are better able to manage ourselves in the ever-changing landscape of our world. By our example, we will encourage others in a most positive light. We will help others accommodate change and in doing so we will all become leaders of change. This not only allows us to bring our full resources, thinking and energy to unfamiliar circumstances, but also gives us more insight and a global view of the opportunities that surround us.
Where our attention goes, so does our energy. Do not get mired in the thought-process and allow change to be a negative. Choose to be proactive, focus on the positive. Let's not be shackled by change - rather let's see the freedom and opportunity change truly and authentically allows.
Let's not merely survive let's thrive!
