OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Thrive Global’s Arianna Huffington announced they are teaming up to find AI solutions for the 130 million Americans diagnosed with at least one chronic condition with their new project: “Thrive AI Health”.
According to their press release, Thrive AI Health is an AI health coach designed to give personalised health recommendations on sleep, food, fitness, stress management and connection using people’s OpenAI?and Thrive Global’s behavioural change methodology, meaning it will be trained on peer-reviewed science, user personal preferences and goals, and biometric, lab and other medical data.
The new venture from Altman and Huffington will partner with Thrive AI Health’s CEO, DeCarlos Love, who previously led fitness and health experiences at Google’s Fitbit subsidiary; Walmart co-founder Helen Walton’s Alice L. Walton Foundation and the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine.
Thrive AI Health’s Goal and Vision
AI in healthcare has been a growing trend in recent years as to how technology can help revolutionise and minimise shortages in the industry. However, according to the two: “Most health recommendations at the moment, though important, are generic.”
Thus, to offer a unique perspective, Thrive AI Health will “make possible precise recommendations tailored to each person. For example, swapping your third-afternoon soda with water and lemon; go on a 10-minute walk with your child after you pick them up from school at 3:15 p.m.; start your wind-down routine at 10 p.m. since you have to get up at 6 a.m. the next morning to make your flight”.
Moreover, Huffington highlighted that AI is the “key to?behaviour change as it is not enough to give people a generic 10,000 steps goal or suggest the Mediterranean diet. With Thrive AI Health, we now have an opportunity to use that miracle drug of behaviour change by democratising what people in the 1% know and practice.”
For example, the press release wrote: “Consider what it’s like to be a busy professional with diabetes. You might struggle to manage your blood sugar levels, often missing meals and exercise due to a hectic schedule. A personalised AI health coach, trained on your medical data and daily routines, could provide timely reminders to take your medication, suggest quick and healthy meal options, and encourage you to take short breaks for exercise.”
Why AI Healthcare Personalised Apps Are A Growing Trend?
Following the example of other AI healthcare personalised apps, such as MyFitnessPal, Fitbit, Ada Health and Lark, Thrive AI Health is the latest tech industry effort to create a health-focused app with AI-driven personalisation. However, why is that?
Firstly, these applications leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to provide tailored health advice, track fitness metrics, and monitor chronic conditions from user inputs, which can provide personalised recommendations and insights. Thus, by analysing trends in health data, these apps can alert users to potential issues and suggest preventive measures.
Furthermore, it is more convenient and accessible for the general public as these apps provide health information and support at users’ fingertips. There are also personalised reminders and motivational feedback from AI apps, which can improve adherence to medication, diet, and exercise regimens, leading to people making informed decisions about their health and wellness and achieving better health outcomes.
Lastly, some AI health apps focus on mental health, offering tools for stress management, mood tracking, meditation, and even cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques. If anything is urgent, many AI health apps also offer telemedicine features, allowing users to consult with healthcare professionals remotely.
With everything considered, as AI technology evolves, we can expect these apps, such as Thrive AI Health, to become even more sophisticated, offering deeper insights and comprehensive health management solutions.
In the words of DeCarlos Love: “Thrive AI Health Coach is the product to solve the limitations of current AI and LLM-based solutions by providing personalised, proactive and data-driven coaching across the five daily behaviours. It is how it will improve health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and significantly impact chronic diseases worldwide.”
