Three years at Flatiron Health
I remember walking in on my first day petrified that I wasn't prepared for what was to come. I knew next to nothing about oncology and internal recruiting. But I did know how to grind (thanks to Workbridge Associates) and how to make connections (thanks..personality?). I was greeted by a nimble but talented recruiting team. The first six months was a whirlwind of learning all we do at Flatiron and all the unique roles tech recruiting owns. I also learned the pros/cons of free flowing snacks and that even with free lunch you need to get some outside time during the day. Cold brew can be dangerous and kombucha isn't half bad.
Fast forward a few years and I'm pretty amazed at all that we've accomplished. We were 350 employees when I started and now we are at ~900 (and growing!). We've moved to a beautiful office in Soho next to Trader Joe's and now a CVS. Big perk. People will ask me what I work on at Flatiron. It's hard to articulate everything, but I'll give it a whirl. I've sourced and hired for so many incredible teams including Quantitative Sciences, Medical Informatics, QA, SWE, Product Design, IT, SRE, Data Insights and more. I've worked with hiring managers on navigating the waters opening new roles and uncharted territories in the market. What exactly is a Manager of Health Data De-identification? We figured it out. How do you hire for a PhD coming from academia and convince them to work at a tech company? We figured it out.
I'd be remiss not to highlight the mentors and managers who have helped me throughout my career this far. My first manager Kathleen Nealon taught me the foundations of recruitment and hustle, but also how to have fun doing it. Jason Greenhouse took a chance hiring me at Flatiron Health and I'm eternally grateful he did. Josh Feintuch took me under his wing when I started and has taught me so much about stakeholder management and filling difficult roles. Lily Li has been an amazing mentor since the day she started revamping our SWE hiring process. Hillary Mager has taught me to never give up closing a candidate and how to always start with why. It's too many people to name, but I'm also very grateful for the hiring managers I've worked with. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a team grow from 3 to 13 or 15 to 30 people. Our recruiting team has also grown tremendously and they are all-stars.
We're definitely still hiring and taking on some really exciting new initiatives as a company. Flatiron may not be a startup anymore, but the energy, values, and culture are all the same. Still only tipping the scale in what we can do in cancer care and research.
