In an increasingly urbanized world, the World Bank forecasts a 50% increase in passenger traffic by 2030. This compels us to consider sustainable mobility habits as a fundamental pillar towards greener and more efficient urban development.

This June, we commemorate World Bicycle Day and World Environment Day. At AFZ, we want to highlight the urgency of adopting an effective sustainable mobility approach focused on caring for our planet.

Why is sustainable mobility so important?

Considering that transportation generates 42% of greenhouse gas emissions in Costa Rica, according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), focusing on sustainable transportation alternatives such as bicycles can significantly impact pollution and climate change mitigation.?

At the same time, sustainable mobility is a key factor in creating more livable urban spaces and positively impacting the health of community members. Let's review the main benefits of promoting ecological transportation alternatives within the free trade zone:

• Reduction of Traffic Congestion: Encouraging the use of bicycles or public transportation helps alleviate the congestion of private vehicles and improve traffic flow.?

• Improvement in Physical Health: Active movement such as cycling or walking has a positive impact on health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart problems.

• Environmental Protection: Sustainable mobility helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn mitigates climate change and protects ecosystems.

The Path to Eco-Friendly Alternatives

#1 Bicycles for Everyone

The UrBIKES service is accessible to everyone in our business city. This program encourages the daily use of bicycles, providing a healthy and eco-friendly transportation alternative. Here are some key figures showcasing its impact:

• Over 1,800 registered UrBIKES users
• More than 21,000 trips made
• 4,970 hours of bicycle travel
• Over 20,000 kilometers traveled
• 1,350 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) saved

#2 Driving the Future with Charging Stations

A vital element of our sustainable mobility strategy is the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. We have three solar-powered stations that can charge up to six cars simultaneously. By offering this infrastructure, we encourage more people to choose greener transportation options.

#3 Innovation on Wheels for Safety

Our commitment to sustainability also enhances safety and maintenance. By integrating electric vehicles and electric-assisted bicycles into our fleet, we minimize our environmental impact and boost operational efficiency. This transition to faster and quieter transportation fosters a safer and more sustainable work environment.
