Three Ways to Stay Focused When Everything Feels Important
I’m often asked how I prioritize and remain focused in a world where everything seems important. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it! Here are some of the ways I stay on track for success. ?
Don’t Stretch Yourself Too Thin
It’s no secret that our capacity is almost always constrained by resources, time, budget, etc., so the way we manage that capacity is a crucial factor in achieving our goals. Prioritization for me is absolutely key. Whether in my personal or professional life, I know I can’t do it all.
I’ll bring your attention to the law of diminishing returns here. Often the more we try to do, the less we actually accomplish. I’ve found this to ring so true. That’s why at any given time, I try to focus on two or three key priorities - and take them to a logical close before starting the next set. This ultimately keeps me grounded, driven and poised to achieve more. Remember, saying ‘no’ is sometimes just as important as saying ‘yes’.?
The same goes in business. We need to focus on what matters to the customer. If we completed ten sprints in record time, but it doesn’t make a tangible difference for those we serve, we’ve not been successful. “Outcome trumps output” - each and every time, and the way to reach the right outcomes is through intentional focus, not frenzy. ?

Start off on the Right Foot
I like to begin my day early because it helps me get off to a strong start. As I have my espresso each morning, I think through the upcoming meetings for the day, big rocks that need to be planned for and tackled and the handful of things I need to accomplish. These steps help me get prepped and into the zone where I’m at my best.
I’m a great believer that your morning routine sets the tone for the rest of the day, so don’t sell yourself short…start it off right! Also no one else makes it right for you - it is you! ?
Be 100% Present
Years back, I realized I was doing a disservice to myself and often times my family because I wasn’t always fully present. Now, when I’m at work, I’m at work; and when I’m at home, I’m at home. I try not to open my iPad. I’ll admit that I’m not always perfect at this, but it’s the exception rather than the norm, helping me give 100% to everyone who counts on me.
I’m also very purposeful about taking time to recharge and do what brings me joy. These things include reading, exercising, spending quality time with my family and investing in the community. Both of my kids play tennis on Saturday, and I never miss it. It brings me joy to see them learn and grow in their game, and they get to see their dad smiling on the sidelines. It’s a win-win!
I’ve also taught Hindi at a community center and participate in many other volunteer activities, including sitting on the board of Girls Who Code , an organization that provides girls and young women with a unique blend of computer science, sisterhood, and a first-hand look into careers in technology. When you fill the cup of others, it fills yours, as well.

1 年I agree with you! We can only do so many things in the span of the day. Being present is so important so that we don’t miss out on these important events etc. Thanks for the nugget about comptemplating the tough spots to navigate!
