Three ways to get in shape (Save this for January, LOL)

You’ll love this.

#1 “Start with the end in mind”

Takeaway: If you're visually orientated, this is where something like a vision board can help, as fluffy as it might sound.

Start with a crystal clear picture in mind of what you want to look, act and feel like in stressful and day-to-day situations.

Once in place, work backwards from there.

  • From vision to mission
  • To plan, purpose and process

All the way down to whether you should eat that extra cheery Bakewell after tea.

I’ve used this approach successfully for me and my clients previously.

In my case, I wanted to…

- Have abs

- Get married

- Be able to walk again

- Become an international coach to high-achieving men and a best-selling author

4 down, 1 to go.

After that, I might become a demotivational speaker, who knows.

I’ll be visiting Samoa again though that’s for sure.

  • Drinking coconuts on the beach
  • Showing Emma my “Treasure Island”
  • Visiting Robert Louis Stevenson's house again

#2 Start with a broad goal and increase focus + clarity through action.

Takeaway: The monkey mind craves certainty which is one of our 6 human needs so ignore this one at your prevail.

For example…

“I want to lose 20 to 30 pounds and am will start by joining a gym” that sort of thing.

This works as it’s…

  • Clear
  • Objective
  • Allows for adaptation and iteration through implementation

While lacking in richness, unlike my vision board example…

It makes up with certainly through data tracking and analysis and clear goals.

Sure the devil is in the details.

But...

It’s better the devil you know than the one you don’t.

For best results be "data lead" not "data driven"

How do you spell game changer?

A lover of…

  1. Wholesome goals
  2. Fun, food and fat loss in equal amounts

When I came out of the hospital after having sepsis…

With man boobs, a beer belly and weighing 93kg of chub.

My goal was to hit 85 kilos and drop a stone.

The numbers gave me a goal to gamify and improve my ops as well as upgrade my thinking.

Takeaway:

Don’t overlook the power of a numbers-based goal, even if it's just your mind playing tricks on you, it has merit.

Use it to your advantage and to measure success, not to self-manipulate.

#3 Remove the obstacles holding you back.

Takeaway:

This not only reduces stress and cortisol but promotes a sense of well-being as well as improved cognitive function, decision-making and emotional regulation, all necessary for consistent progress to be made and stay out of the God-awful “All or Nothing” mindset.

These can be environmental, physical, psychological, emotional, nutritional or habitual.

If your current health and state are unacceptable, starting by removing the weeds before planting fresh flowers is a game changer.

I like this one for its determination and masculinity, especially when wanting to be the change you want to see in the world.

There's nothing better than a good bit of obstacle overcoming, or dragon slaying.

Mental models (Ogres) to consider:

- Inner critic

- Limiting beliefs

- Inaccurate thinking

- A lack of clear vision

Whichever of the approaches I'm using, or whatever the goal is…

These four ogres usually stand in my way to achieve greatness, surrounded by a healthy dose and a terror barrier too.

1) A tough upbringing (point to prove) will help here

2) A privileged one (boots to fill) will do that too.

Acquire unlimited motivation by focusing on your values and vision, weaponised from your voids.

Then go Tony Stark.

When looking to get in shape…

Which method do you think would work best for you and why?

I think for me removing the obstacles first is the primary goal... then take a broad goal and act to get focus and gradually have clarity towards the ultimate end goal to achieve ?
