Three Ways to Boost Speaking Confidence

Have you ever felt like what you have to say isn’t valued? Well, it’s probably happened to everyone.

Linda Ugelow, confidence coach and author of the book Delight in the Limelight , knows that this is the root of why people feel uncomfortable with public speaking and appearing on camera.

Getting to the heart of the issue and tackling it is Linda’s M.O. as an author, coach, and speaker. She appeared on my live-streaming show Inside Scoop to share her journey to finding her voice and explain how others can change their relationship with publicly sharing their ideas.?

Here are three of her top tips for improving your public speaking skills and boosting your video confidence:

1) Reveal and heal

Linda says that many people have complicated feelings about sharing their ideas and thoughts in a public setting . She suggests thinking about your history and trying to understand where your emotions come from. It may be uncomfortable, she says, but it’s necessary to get to the root of the problem — whether that’s experiences you had in school, family dynamics, or other situations.

“You need to do it with curiosity, and a lot of self compassion,” Linda says.?

2) Create a no-judgment zone.?

Once you’ve established the root of the problem and are done reflecting about what conditioned you into being afraid of expressing yourself, Linda says it’s time to create a sense of safety around speaking.

Even though you can’t control people’s responses to you, you can control how you treat yourself. Don’t criticize yourself, Linda says. “I feel the inner critic is the wounded part of ourselves that needs healing,” she says. Treat that part of yourself with kindness and listen to what you’re actually saying to yourself.

Linda says she reimagines the “inner critic” as “inner ally.” If your self-critiques are things you can change over time, you can make a plan to work on them.?

3) Visualize.

When you have a speaking or video engagement coming up, Linda says to visualize how you want it to go. Imagine yourself speaking articulately and having people respond well to what you have to say.

This trick works for lots of people — even Michael Phelps did it to help him win races! Once you have an outcome in mind, it’ll be easier to set yourself up for success.?

Thanks for the summary, Paula! I'd love to clarify/add to # two– that sometimes we can't help but criticize ourselves. It's important not to criticize the inner critic but rather look at it with curiosity. Ask "Where is this coming from? What am I afraid of? How can I say it in a way that encourages rather than demoralizes me?"
