Three, Two, One, Go!
What does it take to stay motivated, stay determined and cross the finish line on a planned task, project or personal goal?
According to Penny Mallory it's all about developing your 'Mental Toughness', the resilience and the confidence to continue when things get difficult or feel too hard or too tough.
I invited Penny to have a conversation with me because I loved her story and her focus on 'psychology powered performance.' As someone who defied all odds to become a Champion Rally Driver and then the first woman to compete in a World Rally Car for Ford at the World Rally Championship, I knew she would have lots to share about operating in adversity, overcoming stress and building confidence.
What I didn't expect was that our conversation would help her realise was how influential clothing had been in building that confidence and helping her get to where she is today!
'The first time I went to a rally school (and I was rubbish), I thought if I am going to be a rally driver, I need sponsorship because I don't have any money. I borrowed someone's racing overalls. It was the clothing that started it. I've never thought about it like this...but that outfit and the look, it gave me a little bit of confidence to think I could pull this off.'
Penny breaks down the 4 Cs of Mental Toughness for listeners explaining why it requires a combination of: Control, Challenge, Commitment and Confidence to start building the resilience and determination to stay mentally tough. #
We discuss the moments that have shaped her career and the clothes that have helped her along the way:
'Every rally that I did, I put on the rally overalls and the helmet and the gloves and the boots. I never thought of this, never thought about it out loud but that prepared me for competing, and it was actually really significant.

You put on your confidence. You literally zip your arms and legs into this piece of clothing, and when you are sat on a start line, when you know they're going three, two, one and you've got to go, wearing the crash helmet, they say you get a red mist in front of you. You get angry and aggressive but you can't do it without that helmet on...it's like I was literally putting on a confidence in clothing.'
In an increasingly unpredictable world, mental toughness is and the opportunity to take control of the challenges we face is undoubtedly a good thing.
Finding the clothes that can help you to do this and go from stressed to well dressed...even better!
