So, you have been thinking about going into business for yourself.
You’re excited for what the future might hold, have a head full of ideas and you’re ready to hit the ground running… but with so much to do and your mind working overtime it can be difficult to know exactly where to start or focus your attention. At this point there are a few things you need to remember which I will attempt to break down for you as simply as I possibly can.
Getting started can be an equally exciting and confusing time for any aspiring business owner, but once you have made the decision there should be no holding you back. Your drive and passion for what you are about to step in to will be an extremely important part of your early start-up period.
Countless people dream of becoming entrepreneurs but never do it. They will often have a variety of excuses at the ready for why they didn't follow through but in actual fact the most common two reasons are a fear of failure or a feeling of it all being too hard.
It’s all too hard
If it all feels too hard then making the decision not to become a business owner is the best decision you can make, because if you are not prepared to put in the extra work and effort in to your business, nobody else is going to.
Don’t fear failure.
Don’t let a fear of failure hold you back. There is no straight path in business on often you will travel many roads to get to your destination, sometimes you never actually end up where you set out to be… and that is perfectly okay. There is no failure in business, only experience to be gained and lessons to be learned.
Business life can be hard work, but it can be just as rewarding. The hardest step to take is always the first one but that shouldn't deter you from making a decision that could change your life for the better.
Here are three tips that will set you on the right track.
Get Out There and Do It
Don't be one of the countless people I have met with an 'if only' outlook on life. Make your decision and do it. Don't fear failure, fear not giving it a go. Keep it simple when you start out and don’t try to hit all your goals in a week.
My Tip
There's no need to reinvent the wheel when starting a business. Too many times people will make the mistake of over thinking things and creating complexity where there needn't be any. If you have taken the time to do your research, set your goals and are comfortable with getting started, that’s all you need. Stay true to the reason you made this decision.
Set Realistic Business Goals
Ensure that your goals are achievable. It is fine to aim high but be realistic and you need to be prepared to review your goals regularly. Where you end up might be a million miles from where you start out and that is a great thing. Be sure to review your goals regularly.
My Tip
For every large goal there should be a series of small goals that you check off along the way. Make sure that you understand what each step entails on the journey to the big goal. Map them out, revisit them and review them. Nothing is set in stone, it’s ok to change things up from time to time.
Talk… to EVERYONE
Speak up about your business. How many times have you heard the saying - The best form of marketing is word of mouth? Well it's true! And it should start from yours. Let your passion shine through your communications, get this right and you won't ever have to sell a thing, people will buy in to you because they resonate strongly with you.
My Tip
Don't be afraid to speak up about your business. Use networking events, seminars and conferences to do so in person. Use social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to spread the word online. Ask friends and family to engage with you and share your social media content, it only takes one comment or click to make a difference.
