Three Tips for Networking Events
It’s not often in sales that we are in an environment where people don’t know who we are but are interested in interacting with us.
Welcome to the magic of a networking event! Here are three tips that will help you succeed.
1. NEVER start with what you do – Always start a conversation by being interested in the other person “Tell me about your company?” “What do you do?”
Even if all you want is to share your idea or mission, it’s extremely important to show deep and honest interest in the people we are engaging with.
2. Business cards are great, LinkedIn is better.
I always write on the back of an individual’s business card what next steps are and add them to my network on LinkedIn.
In person, we only have so much time to make an impression. If we are creating content and evangelizing our message and mission on LinkedIn, we can better build a relationship and provide value to the people we want to connect with. Pointing an individual to content that would be useful to them on your LinkedIn can help to double down this effort.
3. Have fun!
At the end of the day it’s super important when we are in a networking environment that we are genuine and having fun! When you decide to relax and let a little personality come out, you’re going to better attract people to you in a way that will consistently lead to strong relationships.
Plus these days you usually get free food and beer at networking events; what are you waiting for?
