Three Things to Remind Yourself When Struggling

Three Things to Remind Yourself When Struggling

Each day, I share a journal prompt with the members of my Samita Lab Mastermind. Today, in the spirit of self-leadership, I share my three:

  1. I'm doing the best I can. This morning at my 6am workout, on the 32nd lift of the barbells, weighing 50 pounds, I was struggling. I said to myself, "I'm pushing hard with my business. My brain is burning a ton of sugar. I'm turning 50 this year and need to give in to my age. I showed up. It's bloody 6am and most people are still asleep. I am doing the best I can."
  2. I am a big fan of 'get it out of my body.' When something is bothering me, I write it down on paper. If I am really struggling, I answer Byron Katie's 4 questions. Recently, I was disappointed by a good friend, who has dropped off since he got together with his new girlfriend. I'm telling myself a story in my head that our friendship isn't important anymore, so I answered the four questions:

  • Is it [the story] true? Our friendship isn't important anymore. Well. I haven't asked him for independent confirmation of this.
  • Can you absolutely know that it’s true? No, I'm sure we should have a conversation.
  • How do you react when you believe that thought? I feel silly. I'm acting on a story I'm telling myself that he doesn't value our friendship.
  • Who would you be without the thought? I'd reach out and set up a time to speak. I'm a 'take action' kind of girl

3. Feedback is about THEIR priorities and preferences. Tara Mohr writes this piece of gold in her book Playing Big and it's liberated me from angst. Yesterday, I offered to meet someone for breakfast at 8:30 am Friday after my workout. It's the only hole I have in my schedule this month. She responded, "I don't do breakfast meetings before 11am." It's not that she doesn't want to meet me. She prefers to get going later in the day. I'm admittedly an early riser. Mohr writes that its only important to integrate the feedback if the person fits into your target audience. My late breakfast query is not coming from my target audience right now. No love lost there.

My name is?Joya?Dass. I made my living as a television news anchor for 20 years. Very specifically, I covered the financial markets from the floor of the?New?York Stock Exchange. It was what I wanted to do since I was 4 years old. But I forged that career on my own, and had to build the network to get here. Nobody teaches this stuff in school. So I created a leadership platform to teach best practices around self leadership and networking. I drive programming by interviewing CEO's and thought leaders for the community I have built.
