Three things I wish I had known when I started digital marketing…

There are three things I wish I had known at the start of my digital marketing journey…

#1. This skill rules the world… high level CEOs use it, politicians use it, news outlets use it. It’s mind blowing. Anything that needs to be connected to an audience uses digital marketing! Everyone that’s got real success uses this skill at the highest leverage possible. Mega brands spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes millions of dollars a day in ad spend.

If I had known back in the day when I was working as a carpenter and joiner that this was true, I would have taken it more seriously and obsessed more about it rather than using it as a side hustle to my personal training business.

#2. I wish I had realized I could have just learned the skill on other people’s money rather than trying to learn on my money.

Yes… I know that sounds weird… but hear me out….

Note to reader: Make sure you are going through a course with awesome reviews (that’s why I started The Digital Marketing School) or have an excellent mentor when jumping into this step.

I wish I knew back when I was starting out that people wanted to pay for others to do their digital marketing rather than learn it themselves. Had I known this, I would have jumped right in started doing digital marketing for others, spending their money on ads, rather than building my own personal training business that was still a time for money trade, rather than a value for money trade. If I knew how much digital marketers were needed back then, I would have been running lead generation for other clients and getting paid to do that while mastering the skill using other people’s money. I didn’t realize this until a few years into my actual business journey, and then I switched models and things then really took off for me.

But I wish I had known that sooner.

I wish someone had told me, “Hey, Scott, you can actually learn this with other people’s money.” It is absolutely crazy what is possible here. So ask yourself this — Would you rather spend your own money or would you rather get really good using someone else’s money? And you know an amazing thing when you’re responsible for someone else’s money? When you’re spending someone else’s money, oh my God, your level of urgency goes up.

You’re not going to fail. You’re going to do everything in your power to get that person’s money to work because you care and you’re a nice person. And that’s how you show up in the world. That’s exactly what allowed me to go from good to great when I finally realised I could spend other people’s money, because I was like, “I’m not losing so they are not losing. I’m going to provide a great service to them.” And I did.

#3. I wish I realized back then that digital marketing was the engine that drove all business models. Because at the end of the day, your product development is really important and it’s all good developing products and making it the best. But no one is going to know about it with out marketing… It can be the best product in the world, but if you’ve not got the right marketing, then you’re never going to get people in and then you’re never going to get the snowball effect of your customers telling more people. Marketing is the driving engine! Marketing is the one skill that drives all business models. And if you can learn and get really good at it, then you can build any business you want in the future.

Hopefully this allows you to realize the importance of digital marketing and helps you to take that step to discovering more about it.

Big Love!

Scott
