Three Things Every Leader Needs...

Three Things Every Leader Needs...

Pizza needs crust, sauce, and cheese. PB&J needs bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Leaders need fear, direction, and a follower...

Every good recipe has a list of critical ingredients. The same is true when it comes to leadership. You can be a leader with any one of these but you won't be an effective leader without all 3 of them.

  1. You need at least 1 follower. If you wanna be a leader you should aim to have a follower. Don't worry if you start your journey alone. If the other two items on the list are sound, you'll snag a follower. Then watch your following grow from there.
  2. You should be afraid of the unknown and still willing to proceed with it. This is called imposter syndrome. The best leaders are all imposters, if they aren't imposters that means they've been there before or someone led them there in the past. You can't boldly go into the unknown if it's not unknown. Sometimes you've gotta take the first step and move forward.
  3. You need a direction. When you get into your car to go anywhere, one of the first things you do is get the directions on your phone. At the very least you know where your destination is. Begin with the end in mind- Stephen Covey You get to choose your mission, direction, or destination, if you're a good leader people will follow you there.

Just like pizza, you can add some toppings, empathy, communication, negotiation, etc. The toppings will enhance the pizza. We'll ultimately judge our pizza based on the core ingredients. Don't be afraid to toss in some extras, focus on the top 3 and add to them as you get better. If you master these then you'll be able to call yourself a good leader. Or at a minimum, you'll be able to order lunch...
