Three Takeaways from the 2023 Pfizer Impact Report

At Pfizer, our breakthroughs extend beyond the laboratories where our researchers are continuously exploring and creating new medicines and vaccines. From reducing our environmental footprint to expanding access to the products our patients are counting on, here are a few ways we are putting our purpose first.

?? Accelerating Climate Action ??

Addressing climate change is one of the most critical challenges of our time, requiring collaborative efforts to address the profound effects on our planet and our collective wellbeing. Building on our goal to achieve the voluntary Net-Zero Standard by 2040 – by which we aim to dramatically reduce our company’s GHG emissions by 95% and our value chain emissions by 90% from the levels recorded in 2019 – I’m proud that we achieved a 13.9% reduction in GHG emissions since 2019.

We’re committed to continue to accelerate action so that we can aim to achieve the Net-Zero Standard by 2040, ten years earlier than the timeline described in the Standard.

???? Expanding Access to Medicines and Vaccines ????

I fundamentally believe that scientific innovation can help people live longer and healthier lives. But I also know that our medicines and vaccines can only positively impact patients’ lives if those patients can actually access them.

Here’s one example that brings me pride: An Accord for a Healthier World, an initiative that aims to close the health equity gap and help provide access to healthcare innovation for 1.2 billion people living in 45 lower-income countries around the world.

Through the Accord, Pfizer has committed to enable access to the full portfolio of medicines and vaccines for which it holds global rights – both current and future products – on a not-for-profit basis to these countries. This includes hundreds of essential medicines and vaccines, as well as breakthrough prevention and treatment options for many of the most significant infectious and non-communicable diseases impacting lower-income countries.

Accelerating access and building stronger health systems takes incredible time and effort, and I’m so proud of the progress made to date – including work alongside governments to support the implementation of a breast cancer program to help enable earlier breast cancer diagnosis.

?? Leading with a Patients First Mentality ??

When we prioritize patients in everything we do, we’re better positioned to fulfill our purpose: breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. In 2023, we hosted our second Global Patient Advocacy Forum at our New York headquarters to discuss how we can best support and collaborate with patients. Our remarkable Global Patient Advocacy team – led by [tag] Emma Andrews – led this effort, working closely with colleagues across the company to build relationships with patient advocacy groups across therapeutic areas and regions.?

I’m sometimes asked why we invest in this work – after all, couldn’t we develop medicines and vaccines without the input of patients? My answer is no. Partnerships can make a key difference in improving patient outcomes: they help us involve patients more in research and development, address important policy and social issues, create valuable resources and programs that benefit patients, and much more.?

We’re honored to share knowledge, foster dialogue, and increase awareness among patient advocacy groups, and reaffirm our commitment to listening to patients’ needs and the challenges they face.
