Your perceived challenge
As a lawyer, you might feel that you spend way too much time trying to improve your English, only to continue to have trouble negotiating, drafting and presenting cases in English.
You’ve watched countless videos, studied from a number of grammar books, and even spent money on courses promising better legal English in a short amount of time.?
However, you're still not at the level you want to be at in your career.
Your real challenge
The truth is that if you keep doing what you do, you're going to burn out before you ever reach the level of legal English proficiency you wanted.
Instead of continuing to learn everything, you need to focus on what you need to succeed in legal English that is specifically designed for lawyers like yourself.?
Let me use an analogy to help you understand.?
Let’s say your vitamin C level is low, and you want to fix it.?
Instead of taking concentrated vitamin C pills, you decide to take multivitamin pills.?
You know what’s going to happen next. You can take multivitamin pills every day, but your vitamin C level will not improve as much as you’d like because you are not focused on solving the problem.?
It seems very straightforward, but this is exactly what has happened to your legal English learning journey.?
You have tried to learn everything about English, but really, you only need to focus on learning the English that you need in your career as a lawyer.

The solution
In order to improve your English so you can succeed in your legal career, you need to follow these 3 steps.
1. Read and analyse legal documents.
You need to do this because you it will not only help you to increase your legal vocabulary, but it will also help you to learn about the structure and style of legal documentation.
You can achieve this by reading statutes, contracts, legal articles and cases. You can also take specific legal English classes given by someone who is qualified in and who works/has worked in that area and who can help you develop your legal analytical skills as well as your language.
2. Improve your written English
This is needed because so much of the legal English that you use in your career will involve you actually writing, for example, drafting legal documents, drafting briefs to counsel, writing letters and emails to clients, writing legal articles and preparing presentations.
You can achieve this by taking a specialist legal English writing course or attending legal writing workshops. Remember to request feedback from your mentor and to pay attention to the structure, style and language used in those documents.
3. Study legal terminology
This is needed because you need to develop a deep foundation in legal vocabulary. You need to be familiar with the commonly used terms and phrases in the specific area of law that you are interested in. This may also including having to learn some Latin terminology.?
You can achieve this by working with a qualified teacher who has specialised in legal English to help you understand the nuances and precise meanings of terms within legal documents and discussions.?
