I wanted to talk today about something that I think is really important as we’re moving ourselves forward. There's three things that really make a difference in building your digital brand and there's some really important techniques that you can use but if you don't get these three things right, if you don't spend a little bit of time on it you're not going to get to where you want to be and the challenge that we all have is that we want to be somewhere but we don't know how to get there. Those three things are:
1. Be Relevant
2. Be Consistent
3. Be Targeted
BEING RELEVANT
You need to make sure that whatever you're doing is relevant and you need to know your target. This is huge, I think that if you can get your audience down and really understand them and what's relevant when it comes to copy, relevancy has got to be in your headline. When you are talking about becoming more relevant, what you're talking about is creating a rocking headline that means something to them.
See every time you create a headline that means something to the people that you're trying to attract to the people that are your students, your tribe, your friends, anything that you do needs to mean something to them and that's where you find relevancy it's super simple but so often we forget to do it. So that's what I want you to focus on: What's the headline? One of the things that I like to do at the beginning of every week is I go out and create some headlines, anywhere from 25 to 50. I have a working list and I've got between 200 - 300 headlines on my list, it's a crazy number I know but I like to keep it on a Google Doc and then just keep adding and adding and adding. So this way at the end of the month I have a big pool of headlines that I think would be relevant to the people that I'm sharing this with and I'll put those headlines at the top of a post or put them on LinkedIn.
I am also very specific on the marketing of my pages and it's really building pretty quickly. Our targeted ads generally bring in about 1000 people on Facebook and it's really good targeted marketing. That's allowing us to develop our customer base. If you're not putting in the work consistently and if you're not relevant then nobody cares so we want to make sure that your relevancy can be easily seen in a headline that means something to your targeted audience. The best time to do that is Mondays. Just sit down and check the Google Trends and find some headlines that are relevant to what you do. I know a lot of people tell you “don't watch the news,” well the news is relevant and your tribe might be watching the news. Your headlines might be related to the news, this way it's easily identifiable as something that's important. For example, “What's trump going to do with the wall in Mexico?” That might be important to your audience so then you could say “We want to talk about walls!” in marketing you know marketing breaks walls it drops barriers so you want to make sure that you're doing something like that.
BEING CONSISTENT
Let’s talk about consistency. So here's what I do: Every week I’ll write down twenty five to fifty headlines. Then I will find the ones that I think are the yummiest and schedule them out over 7 days. Typically I'll post some articles about leadership or making decisions, being focused, being passionate or forgiving. There's lots of things that I write about, and on any one of these headlines I’ll make between three and six images. These are some of my social media strategies that have helped me make millions of dollars with my business. I didn't make it in the same way my contemporaries have made it, I haven't sold millions of dollars of $2 or $3 product that’s not how I do business. My business model is doing big numbers with a few people, but those people see that I'm relevant to them, they see that I'm consistent and can see that I know what I'm doing. I love it and I'm passionate about it, I love coaching people. You want to make sure that what you're doing is relevant and then create the supporting cast of little pieces so that they see the consistency so your audience will say “Hey man this person looks cool, they sound cool, they act cool. They’re doing it every day so they must be cool.”
So my consistency comes from my Monday morning headlines where I write whatever comes to my mind. Funny enough the ones that I think will never work are the ones that we get the best results on in our advertising.
BEING TARGETED
When we talk about being targeted what I mean is knowing your target. So really your target is what you might call an avatar or we call it a backstory. We're creating a character and we create a back story for that character, some people call it demographics. I like to use character and backstory because demographics don't tell that story well, generally what they tell you is gender and age and where they live and maybe their income level. That tells a little bit of a story but might not be enough information to successfully target your audience.
Here’s why I like a good backstory: Star Wars makes so much money because of their rich characters. Let’s take for instance Han Solo's character; before they put Han solo on film they had to create a backstory for him, they had to create a backstory for Luke Skywalker they had to create a story of how did he become who he is? How did Princess Leia become who she is? The backstory is what sells, that's what makes you attached to the characters. So when you're creating your headlines, ask yourself, “Are these headlines relevant to my character?”
One of the things that we do in our Group Coaching is we make sure that we spend a lot of time on character development. Because if you understand the character that you're speaking to, the human being that you're speaking to, the person that you're connecting with then you'll know their fears and frustrations. You'll know where they're confident and where they're scared and nervous. When you help them overcome what they're scared about or what they're nervous about, they’re happy to do business with you! They’ll think “They understand me! They are like me! They come from where I come from!”
I happen to be Italian and I was born in New York City. I spent some time in Brooklyn and grew up mostly on Long Island. I spent time with my friends in Brooklyn or the Bronx almost every weekend growing up because that's where we had family dinners. So it's easy for me to connect to Italians from New York because we have something in common, something that’s relevant to me. So if I create headlines around that they're gonna be moved by it because they already understand what the backstory of my potential character.
Here's the deal: You want to create headlines that are relevant to your character and post them daily. If you apply this every single day for the next 45 to 90 days you can make a massive impact on your business. Your message will be understood, your culture will grow and become more vibrant.
