I know it sounds harsh, but some websites just suck. There is no easy way around it. But, this doesn't mean you can't make some changes.
I'll break down a few things to change for a better website. I won't be getting into the nitty-gritty on this post because it gets very in-depth, but there are three things you can change to make your site better.
Unfortunately, so many companies limit themselves and their companies because these processes seem out of reach.
What can you expect with these changes? More leads.
Now, this isn't a do this and guaranteed 1000% conversion increase; however, if you have a good product, viable site traffic, and implement these processes, you will see growth.
Four main thoughts drive companies to leave the website for last.
?? It costs too much.
?? You need to be an expert.
?? Our leads don't come from the website.
?? (My personal favorite) Does it matter?
What if I told you anyone could do them given time? What if I said these three things should be your top priority?
Here's what I do step by step:
You MUST get your website speed up. Google loves fast.
If you want any of your content to rank higher in Google SERP, then you have to, I repeat, have to speed up your site. If your site isn't loading quickly, it's 2022, and there are over 1 billion other sites to browse.
47% of customers expect a webpage to load in two seconds or less, with your conversion rate dropping, on average, 30% for every second past.
Do yourself a favor and speed up your website. Take a look at your javascript, CSS, and images. Changing your javascript and CSS to a .min version significantly increases your speed. Here are a couple of tools I use to reduce my page speed:
?? Google's PageSpeed Insights for page speed analytics
?? Tinypng for image compression
?? Minifier for CSS/JS reduction and minifier
By using these tools, you can see a significant increase in the loading time for your website. For those with a Shopify website, reach out to me for a few more steps to see speed increases.
Design. Design. Design. First Impressions Matter!
Just like with a book, people, companies, etc, first impressions matter. Whether you are trying to win prospective business or hiring new talent, what you present online is what matters. The design is what they remember because it is part of the user experience (UX).
Now you don't have to be a web developer to implement this step, it definitely helps, but there are so many resources to make your site look nice.
?? envatoelements has website, email, and landing page templates.
?? Squarespace & Shopify are my go-to for website building for beginners
?? Webflow is my personal favorite website builder
Even if your site is on a different provider you can use these resources to find a style that you like and start making the changes. If you are looking to migrate to a new provider don't forget the URL redirect list! ??This is key if you don't want to lose any of your current traffic!
You only have 50 ms to make a great first impression, better make sure your site leaves a good one!
Usability is the way of the future!
How easy is your site to navigate, find what you're looking for, and does the solution come across? Because page speed and first impressions are all about quickly grabbing the users' attention, if you can't find what you're looking for fast, the battle has already been lost.
Take a moment of your time to think through how easy things are to find on your site.
?? Do you need to implement a search function?
?? Should the most browsed site be featured on the home page?
These are all questions you need to ask yourself to help your site perform better.
Once your site has loaded, and your design made a standing first impression, you only have so many seconds to provide relevant information.
15 seconds. That's it.
You have 15 seconds to provide your user with the information to sell your product, solution, or business.
