Three Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Invest in Your Career

Three Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Invest in Your Career

…Just kidding. If you're looking for a wake-up call (with some cheeky humor) to invest in your career, then read on; this blog will uncover three reasons why people avoid making an effort toward their career goals. We all want to take our career to the next level, but sometimes things can get in the way.?

Here's a reality check – these might be keeping you from reaching your full potential.?

1.? You’re afraid of having more responsibility and challenges at work.

  • Some research shows that we are actually more worried about being a success than being a failure.??
  • Our beliefs may be telling us that successful people are selfish, narcissistic, or just mean.
  • We worry that we don’t know things or we don’t know everything.?

2.? You’re happy being unhappy.

  • When we have a crappy job we can blame other people - parents, bosses, the government…and parents – instead of admitting to ourselves that we need to do some work and get a job that we love.
  • We get attention from our loved ones or others. It’s nice to have people listening to our woes and tribulations about work.
  • We find a group to be with. Misery loves company. The people who spend their lunch time complaining about work love to have new members.

3.? You can’t afford the time and money.

  • Of course it costs money to invest in yourself. But often the truth, for many of us, is that we are choosing how we spend our money, not that we don’t have any money. We choose the Starbucks or the manicure or new car rather than education or coaching.??
  • We don’t value ourselves enough to think we are worth it. Interestingly, parents will spend money on private schools, coaches, and tutors for their kids more than for themselves.??
  • It’s an excuse. It’s easier to say, I can’t afford it than to look at the real reason I’m afraid.

Sound familiar? It's important to acknowledge and uncover why we're using them. Is it fear or are we just escaping uncomfortable realities? Bettering ourselves doesn't mean avoiding responsibility – it means taking control of our lives and investing in ourselves at a deeper level. This investment can take different forms, from devoting time to grow our skillset to exercising discipline. We have the power to shape our professional destinies, so instead of shying away from opportunities, invest and pursue them. Crafting goals is the first step in setting out for success. It's time to stop making excuses – rise up, choose you, and get investing.
