Three Reasons ChatGPT Doesn't Help Your Resume Get Through Applicant Tracking Systems

ChatGPT and AI tools are the bright shiny object these days.

While the technology can automate some repetitive processes, it hasn't gotten to the stage that it can help your resume or application get through ATSs.

In fact, using ChatGPT or AI tools on your resume/application makes it less likely that you'll get interviews or job offers.

Here are three reasons why ChatGPT isn't the answer to get your resume through ATSs:

  1. Makes You Appear Average: ChatGPT is an easier way to generate average answers from search engines. So when you ask AI tools to write your resume so that it matches a job description or suggest language for a bullet point, it provides average language, making you appear average. It will also provide similar language to the other job seekers who enhance their resume with AI. An average resume/application won't help you get more interviews.
  2. Doesn't Match Enough Of The Real Criteria: ChatGPT won't know the hidden criteria, so your resume won't be a match for half of the real search criteria. Published job descriptions are written by HR to cover many similar positions, with generic/broad criteria, to protect the employer from HR lawsuits. The hiring manager sees that the published job description doesn't meet their individual current needs, and send updated requirements to the recruiter working on the job, so the real search criteria are usually?50+% different than what was published.?
  3. New ATS Versions That Screen Out AI Generated Text: New versions of ATSs have AI search capability, including the ability to reject AI enhanced resumes. Recruiters can often tell when a resume has been written with AIs help, as it uses telltale language patterns and wording. Employers know that AI enhancement often means a resume includes claims that don't represent what you really did, or exaggerates it ... and it's not a sample of your written communication.

Finally, when your resume is written by ChatGPT, don't you think that gives an employer the impression that you feel AI can communicate more effectively than you can? Do you think there are many opportunities where this will help you (other than maybe, AI software engineer)?

Good thing there are more effective ways to get your resume through and around Applicant Tracking Systems.?
