I am not sure about you but many people who are in business that I meet are not very serious about achieving either unlimited business success or extreme business success. Some will swear that they are serious but when you start telling them what it takes and what they must do, they start ducking and diving and coming up with all sorts of lame excuses including the typical ones such as;
- I don't have the money
- The government is creating problems for my business
- The economic environment is not right
- The sanctions are causing my business to underperform
- I don't have the resources to grow my business
- The weather is too cold for growing or starting or transforming my business
- There are no opportunities to grow my business right now
- The customers have no money (Really? Your customers have no money? Your customers?)
- There is too much competition
- I am in a survival mode (Nonsense)
Listen, we don't mind tell you this until the end of the world;
- Your product no matter how good or how bad is not the main determinant of your business success; your strategy is!
- The government is not the major reason for your personal business success or failure; your strategy is.
- Economic sanctions imposed on your country are not the reason why your business is underperforming; your strategy is!
- In terms of the economic environment, you must understand that there are absolute problems and relative problems. Absolute problems like power cuts when your business depends on heavy machinery that depends on the national grid (and cannot run on any other substitutes) are real problems. We can understand that. But many other problems that are relative; they are dependent on your current knowledge, information, skills, acumen and abilities and you can solve them easily and produce better business results IN THIS ENVIRONMENT. Many entrepreneurs, business people and business managers miss this point.
- Economic sanctions are not a problem; the lack of a STRATEGY for dealing with them is the problem.
Taking strategy very lightly and overestimating personal knowledge and understanding of STRATEGY are two of the biggest causes of mediocrity in business success. Third is the belief that you can find it all on GOOGLE so you do not need to consult anyone including strategists and strategy consultants. Fourth is reading an article like this one as if you are reading a novel and you take no serious action on what is being said. At the same time, we understand that;
- Some business people and business managers are happy where they are no matter how miserable they are and no matter how meagre the business results they are getting in terms of profits and growth and direction. Have you ever met someone that you warn that she is heading towards doom and the she continues as if she is heading for bliss? I know you are not one of them.
- Some people get into business just to make enough money to live a certain level of life and nothing more. We respect their decision.
- Other business owners and business managers are afraid of unlimited success or extreme success (The Jonah Complex) and we feel for them. It is very sad but what can we do? You can show a donkey the way to a river and even take it right to the river but how do you force it to drink the water? Is it really necessary to force anyone to make more money anyway?
- Some people are victims of academic conditioning where they believe that they have to prove their individual brilliance! It is very common bust sad.
